Firestore is being connected to the camera and your computer via firewire which detects and flags those extra frames. When digitizing via SDI, there is no detection. you also have no way to digitize uncompressed 24PA footage via firewire, which has significant compression. The settings for our capturing were Blackmagic DV50, 23.98, Anamorphic with deck control via RS422 (9pin) at 29.97 (the only way to control the deck with 9 pin). I tested digitizing at 29.97 earlier today, but when tried to apply Remove Advance Pulldown under Tools, I got “File does not contain frames using Advanced Pulldown”. I am absolutely positive this footage is shot 24PA.

Thanks. Our machine doesn’t have firewire, just SDI or HDSDI. We did a test this morning capturing as 29.97. Tried to do the pulldown the way you suggested. It didn’t recognize those extra frames. What about all the 24PA footage captured as 10-bit uncompressed – there is no way to capture uncompressed footage via firewire – there must be some way to remove those frames.

The footage was not digitized via firewire which is capable to detect and flag 24PA, but via blackmagic SDI- where all the settings are either preset or manually input. The settings used for dogitizing this footage was Blackmagic DV50 anamorphic, 23.98.

The clips display 23.98 now, but because they were digitized via SDI they still have those extra frames, I read previously – there should be way to pulldown using Cinema tools.

thanks for your help. The deck we have is HD150 (which is really really great, except it doesn’t have firewire I/O), and I doubt we’ll be investing in new DVCPROHD machine in near future. I guess we’ll have to use cinema tools. BTW, thanks for the article, it was very useful. We are just starting with FCP, moving from Media 100, which is extremely stable and predictable, but lacking FCP features and not an industry standard.

Once again, thanks for your help, and if you hear anything new about blackmagic 2:3:3:2 setting please let me know.

Hey Glen,
Are you familiar with blackmagic settings? Blackmagic has dozens of various capture and sequence presets. Many of them are 23.98 and 29.97 progressive. Some claim, blackmagic figured out the way for proper 24p Mode Advance (2:3:3:2 pulldown).

Getting a different dvcproHD deck with firewire is not an option at the moment.

Hi Glen, Our dvcprohd machine has only SDI or HDSDI out and no firewire. We are using blackmagic card to insure highest uncompressed quality and realtime effects. Any information for proper blackmagic capture and sequence settings for 24PA (not 24P) for digitizing via SDI would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. I will try to re-capture the footage. One question though. I am capturing the footage from machine with SDI out into G5 with blackmagick HD. However the editing will be done either on powerbook (obviously no blackmagick hardware) or another, older G5, that also doesn’t have the blackmagic card installed. What sequence presets I should use, so the footage would not require rendering on these machines.
