  • Thanks for the input and the link!

The dock looks like something I’m looking for. I’ve only been looking at external hard drives.

I really need to back up these files.

    Thanks again!

  • They’re actually different files, so that’s why the size and data rate differ.

Upon closer inspection of the data rates, it turns out that I wrote the wrong frame rate for the Grinder footage. It’s actually 29.97 fps. Would that make up the difference?

Referring to my original question, I’ll just do some tests and see if it works or not.

    Thanks again,
    Vanessa

  • Unfortunately I would have to recapture about 450GB of footage using the Canon plug-in, and that would take forever. I’ve also synced and logged all the footage already. At the time of transcoding my laptop wasn’t strong enough and I had to borrow another computer to do the transcode. Now I have a bigger and better computer (iMac 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7 8GB RAM) and wish I transcoded through the plug-in.

Here are the specs from a Grinder file:

    Name: MVI_0098-ProRes-Standard
    Size: 583.4 MB
    Vid Rate: 23.98 fps
    Frame Size: 1920 x 1080
    Compressor: Apple ProRes 422
    Data Rate: 13.5 MB/sec
    Pixel Aspect: Square
    Field Dominance: None
    Alpha: None/Ignore
    Composite: Normal
    Audio: 1 stereo
    Aud Rate: 48.0 kHz
    Aud Format: 16-bit Integer

Here are the specs from one of the Canon Plugin files:

    Name: MVI_0799 <—–Naming convention
    Size: 961.9 MB
    Vid Rate: 23.98 fps
    Frame Size: 1920 x 1080
    Compressor: Apple ProRes 422
    Data Rate: 17.3 MB/sec
    Pixel Aspect: Square
    Field Dominance: None
    Alpha: None/Ignore
    Composite: Normal
    Audio: 2 Mono <——Different
    Aud Rate: 48.0 kHz
    Aud Format: 16-bit Integer

Does this info help with an analysis?

    Thank you!

  • Hi Shane,

Thanks for the tutorial. I’m editing my first documentary and need help figuring out the workflow. I thought the tutorial had some useful pointers, but would like more info on how to manage with 5D footage, synced sound and merged clips.

    – For syncing sound I’m doing it manually and using Pluraleyes. Pluraleyes makes all these sequences (synced, synced Replaced) and “merged files” bins. Gleaning info from your tutorial, would you suggest making a separate project for merged files? Do you keep the merged interview files separate from the Broll of the interview or put them together on the same timeline?

    – The tutorial gets glitchy in the Narrative Section (in both QT and the alternate player) when you talk about how to organize the footage “all the footage from the dallies bin, everything that’s scene 11, I would highlight and drag into my scene 11 bin.” Ok…would this be another case of making a separate project for Dallies (to keep the original file structure) and then make a new project organized by scenes/recreations? Since the video glitched-out when you moved the files, I was confused as to why you’d move all the clips to the scenes folder, leaving the dallies folder empty. I could be thinking too hard.

    – I liked how you dropped the timecode on a nested sequence, do you do this for each interview? I have transcribed most of the interviews but have to be mindful of which sequence/file I got the audio from. Any suggestions?

    – Also, why is the “Descriptions” column not searchable?! Do I really have to copy and paste everything from the “Descriptions” column to one of the “Master Comments?” Is there a quicker way to do this rather than cutting and pasting?

I hope my questions make sense!

Thanks again for the tutorial and any input you may have.

    Cheers,
    Vanessa

    Thanks!

I’ll check out Magic Bullet and see what magic it can do.

    I’m off to encode.

    Cheers,

    Hi Shane,

Thanks for the video! I wish I watched it BEFORE I started filming. I did not copy over the file structure and am unable to use the Canon EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 in FCP.

    I shot on the 5D 1080p 24fps.
I live in the land of NTSC, not PAL like Daniel.

Since I messed up the data structure, what are the correct settings that I should use in Compressor? Will the “Apple ProRes 422 for Progressive Material” setting work just fine or do I need to make some tweaks?

I’m working on a documentary and have about 450 GB of footage that needs to be converted. I was planning on using a droplet, unless you have any other suggestions.

    Thanks,
    Vanessa
