I’d rather do this in C4D: get your background footage on a plate in C4D and animate the glass bodies in front of it. This way C4D can generate refraction of your background (plus caustics, if you like) and it’ll look much more believable.

AVCHD is a heavily compressed format. Any encoding to another heavily compressed format after treating it to AE can generate bad quality due to the compression losses stacking up. So, your wording seems OK to me, I’d call it crap too.
AVCHD at typical camcorder data-rates is not really a pro codec. If you encode to a format with milder or no compression, you can preserve the initial quality, but you’ll need pretty beefy drives or a RAID.

Try CS5!
There is both the new Roto-Brush, which makes the task much easier if your footage allows (see Adobe.TV), and there is Mocha and Mocha Shapes, which can track a mask very well.

Hi Todd, while we are at it: I know what LUTs are for, but which LUTs are supported in CS5? I tried a few, even from Color Finesse, but AE doesn’t like them.
@ Rahul: talk to the film-out facility which LUT they use (if they are willing to share). You can grade in AE, but it’s not what I’d call a fluid workflow. Color Finesse is not really integrated into AE: no keyframes, masks or tracking in the full GUI. Do you have access to Apple’s Color? I made it cooperate with CS5.

Upgrade to CS5 and get more RAM. You’ll need to upgrade the system too, but 10.5.7 will suffice.

If you footage is very clean (computer generated?), adding a little bit of noise can help.

The audio should be 48 kHz for video. 44.1 is typical for CD.
