Your experience may differ from mine, but I’ve found people usually don’t like getting up to walk to a mic. Even if they are told about using the mic for questions, they start without it and get fussy when told to please use the mic. Getting them to walk to the mic wastes a lot of time.
Having a mic and a mic runner works better.

five people, speaking extemporaneously?
Either separate tracks for everyone and sort it out in post or use an eight channel automixer.
The thing is, when you get that many people, you will have soft talkers and loud talkers, people with weird peaky voices and some with big fat soft voices. If you try to take them all through an Automixer, you’ll have a hard time EQing them separately to make it all sound right.
On individual tracks, you can EQ each person correctly. Don’t think you’ll need it? I can pretty much guarantee you will.

You don’t stipulate which program I referred to; Soundtracck Pro or Boom Recorder.
Assuming you mean Soundtrack Pro, I believe you would NOT use firewire. You would use Apple system or USB. You have to have the right settings in the audio panels for that. It’s a bit too complicated to answer, but I’m pretty sure the info is in the FCP/Soundtrack book.

soundtrack pro works. There are a bunch of apps.
If SMPTE time code is important, Boom Recorder is a very nice app.

Best? Wireless mics on each person to a spearate track to be mixed later.
But apparently, you are trying to do it on the cheap.
So much depends on the size of the stage and the blocking of the actors that answering your question with a high quality answer is pretty impossible.
A shotgun will not sound very good. Shotguns are designed to be used as close as possible to the person speaking. Depending on the acoustical environment, four feet can be too far.
