stage and auditorium recording techniques
I’m looking to invest in an audio recording setup for stage performances and other events held in auditorium type spaces. I’m willing to spend around 500 – 700 dollars total for the mics, but I’m really having trouble figuring out which would work best. I’m deciding between boundary mics, a stereo pair of condensers (ORTF?), a shotgun (which would be preferable because of its uses in other recording situations), or a combination of them up to four total (2 camera inputs plus 2 laptop). Another thing that makes the shotgun approach so appealing is that it’s much less intrusive in the space to set up when it’s further away from the stage.
How can I get the best possible sound quality while minimizing the hassle of setup?
