Keeping audio mono lets you pan it in post if necessary.

Stereo dialog locks you in to a specific perspective unless you record in M/S (mid/side) and choose your spread in post.

Also, in XY stereo, you’re not really pointing the mic at the talent. So you get a lot more ambient sound.

If the talent is still and the camera moves (with the mic attached) the listener can get a bit seasick from the perspective shift.

Nicely put.

I was on a sports shoot doing audio earlier this year; four HDV cams. Wayy too many cams. Just because you have them doesn’t mean you should use them.

A QUALIFIED audio person and his/her gear can make a world of difference.

Good audio is not trivial, especcially when your baseline is Azden.

Hello Reave,

I seem to remember when I reviewed that mic many years ago that the original production model lacked proper conduction of the ground from the lower half of the body to the upper half that covered the capsule. The result was a buzz.

AKG fashioned a retrofit after I brought the problem to their attention. I think it was a little piece of metal that bridged conductivity from the lower body to the top.

Open yours if you feel comfortable and see if that little metal piece is still in place.

Before you try that, try the same cable from one of your mics that doesn’t buzz with the AKG mic. Also use a ground lifter on the AKG power supply or plug it into the same strip you have the mixer plugged into to eliminate the possibility of a ground loop.

Hello HD, and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Here’s what I know as a Mac user.

iTunes works, but you have to dial in the right parameters in the preferences>import pane. 128 stereo should be fine. HIgher is better. Do NOT use the enhancer. They should have called it the phase mangler.

VBR is OK. Use Best or Tweekhead (slowest) encoder.

Also know that the player make a difference. iTunes and Quicktime can make the same file sound a bit different during play back.

Source elements makes a software called Source Connect. It’s a peer to peer VOIP software that uses data compression. It sounds good and the trial period is a week or so.

I predict it will soon make ISDN audio obsolete.

This is camera audio, not audio recorded on an external recorder?

Sound like you need to downsample the audio to restore pitch.
