Audio compressors are pretty much all over the road. Some are colorless. Some have quite a color. If you want a certain thing, you’ll have to find the box that does it for you.

Fast, Cheap, Good; you don’t get all three.

Your budget prevents you from achieving, “a high quality directional mic with low noise and excellent sound quality.” Settle for less or pony up. It’s that simple.

The mics you mention are not top of the line. They are made to sell at a lower price. That means they are not as good as the more expensive mics.

You may also find that a shotgun mic is not going to be enough if you’re planning on shooting inside most conventional spaces.

Think of it as similar to golf. Sure, you can go a round using only a five iron, but you won’t do as well as if you had a bag full. Unlike camcorders, if you buy a good mic, you’ll user it for ten years or more.

**Hello Brad and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum. I too have FCP and STPro. I have been operating DAW software since 1987. The last 8 years or so; Pro ToolsLE. I echo your grumblings over ST Pro. I’m an audio geek. It appears that ST Pro was developed by computer geeks with no sense of how audio geeks operate audio gear. I wish Apple would take me on a nice vacation and ask me 3 thousand questions about their interface. I’ve alpha/beta tested audio software before. I think I could help.

Anyway, I’m trying to decide on a new DAW, and possibly a new interface. I’m thinking either an Mbox with ProTools LE, or the Lexicon Lambda with Cubase SE. I know some clients aren’t as familiar with Cubase for post-type work as ProTools or Nuendo – so that’s actually a consideration. However, I’m more familiar with Cubase, and if the company grows then Nuendo would be an easy upgrade (and probably less expensive than ProTools HD from LE, right?)

**If you go Digidesign (I own an 002 and an 003 and like them very much) Go with hardware that uses firewire instead of USB. All USB I know of has latency problems.

**Don’t know those preamps. I bypass the preamps and AD conversion by using third party preamps and A/D converters with my Digi gear. The stock Digi is OK, I wanted better.

Hi Phil,

LD (large diaphragm) mics are not necessarily warmer. It’s a misconception that big diaphragms make warmer bigger voices.

I thought so as well for years, but proved that wrong with my first uses of a Senny 416 and Schoeps CMC641 for VO work.

You are right about getting too close to LD mics. The proximity effect increases the bass, resulting in a woofy sound.

The trend these days is to get a lav with a “link” sou you can use it hardwired or with your wireless.

The link is simply a M/F connector wired into the mic cable. With the line IN, the mic is hardwired. Unplug the link and the portion attached to the mic plugs into you wireless transmitter.

Countryman, Sony and AT do this with some of their lavs. It saves you from having to buy extra mics. Countryman also sells different cords for their E series over the ear mics. The cord plugs in to the bottom of the mic fixture. Want a hardwired mic? Use the cord that ends in an XLR. Want to go wireless? Use that cord.

As you may know, your choice of boom mics depends a lot on where you intend to record.

Shotguns work well on sound stage and tricked out spaces. They do not work well in normal interiors in houses and offices. They do not work well outside if you’re shooting around surfaces that reflect sound like large cement or blacktop surfaces, near any large, planar surfaces, especially if those surfaces are parallel.

In these areas a good hyper or super cardioid works much better because it ignores the off-axis sound much better than a shotgun. So, right out of the gate, you may need more than one mic.

The best compromise I know of is the Sanken CS-3e. It is not an interference tube shotgun, even though it looks like one. It’s a high quality piece of gear that will serve you well for years to come.

I don’t know what your budget is, but I suggest to folks entering the market that they resist the urge to buy cheap. Depending on your clients, or clients whom you would like to attract, you can’t afford to buy cheap. To that end, renting when you need to may work and rental houses ship pretty much anywhere. I have both “good gear” and rental house indexes in the back of my little audio book. I have an archive of microphone reviews on my web site.

Please tell me how much you’re willing to spend. Think hard about the sum. Unlike cameras, this mic will be with you a long time.
