Mixers are more than knobs that let you vary the volume.
1. They let you vary volumes without shaking the camera or getting in the way of the camera op.
2. You may need to do that a lot with some people. I ride gain even if one person is talking if their voice fades on the end of each line. You can only do this in a relatively quiet environment, otherwise you bring up the ambient noise.
3. Mixer preamps (good ones) sound better than camera preamps.
4. Good mixers have input transformers that scrape off RF before it get into your audio.
5. Good mixers have limiters that allow you to record hotter, keeping your audio further above the noise floor without distorting.
6. Good limtiers have EQ that lets you roll of LF HVAC noise before it gets into your audio.
7. Good mixers have mulitple outputs so you can feed more than one camera, or separate recorder simultaneously.
8. Good mixers make your sound better. If they didn’t pros wouldn’t use them.Regards,

OK Again. Why are you using a compressor?
I just spent some time on the Mackie site. There are no inputs on the master fader.
To compress the mix, you need to run audio out of the mixer through the compressor to where ever it’s going

Compressor – behringer composer pro xl
mixer – mackie 1402setup: compressors(there are 2 for 4 microphones)

when all mics are muted on the mixer, if we push up the monitors we can still hear what is being said.

when mic 1 is unmuted the ouput levels are showing on the compressor for channel 2 (ie mic 2)in unison with channel 1 (mic 1).

also, can’t have mic 1 and 2 going at the same time as there is major distortion. can’t EQ on the mixer as if I try to boost the voice up on , say bass for example, it distorts the sound eg pumping sound.

The reference level IS a huge. It is the ONLY deal.
Are you absolutely sure you have the metering set to PEAK reading?
There should be a solid band of LED, a space and then the peak LED even hgher.

Well it’s important to know WHERE the audio is distorted.
The mixer input, the mixer output, thr mixer headphone output, the camera input.
Trying to power a 48 V DC phantom poweerd mic with on 12 V Phantom, etc.Through a process of elimination, you will find the problem.

Haven’t bought it yet, but I’m thinking painted muslin. Something dappled or lightly patterened. Crinkled would be OK to a certain degree.

Well first, please read the manual.
As I said before, 0 on the 302, -20 on your camera meters.
The 302 has a two stage input. You set the big channel pot to 12 o’clock and tweek the little channel pot one so your PEAKS read about +12 on the 302 meters.
