If you have to be working alone that’s your choice. It will not necessarily yield the best audio. You want good audio you have to have mic near the person speaking. It’s that simple.
Wireless if the area is relatively RF free.
Boom, mic, windgear, small mixer, plug in wireless transmitter, velcro the receiver to the camera. Align the audio system to the camera. Feed one track, use the camera mic pn the other track.

Yes you have to work the re20 closely, eight inches or less.
I’m thinking it’s a cable/connector issue. Laptops and computers in general usually expect a stereo input. A standard balanced XLR to 1/8″ mini cable is the wrong cable.

Actually, what impresses me most is that Ole knows what keystroke to use to put the slash through the “O” in Rode.
Pretty much any mic you mount on a camera isn’t really close enough to get excellent audio.

Dynamic microphones don’t require phantom power.
Dynamic microphones are not as sensitive as condenser microphones.
This is a professional microphone. It requires a good mic preamp to work properly.
You don’t say how you’re using it, or to record what.
Successful audio is the result of choosing the right tool for the job and connecting it properly.
Your situation involves too many variables to hazard a good guess, but my guess is the cable you are using is not wired properly for the inputs you are attempting and that you’re not plugging in to a mic preamp capable of doing the job.

-20 dB is a good level for tone. In a digital system, that means you have room all the way up to 0 dB.
What do you mean your PPM “seems” hot? PPM stands for peak program meter. It should be reading hotter than an RMS meter when reading music and/or voice. Not so different when measuring tone.
You do need to be able to understand analog, digital, as well as RMS and Peak levels to get it right.

Most folks I know who make the comparisons you did don’t take into consideration that the Rode Video Mic is a lot more sensitive. Because it sounds louder to them, and they hear more everything, including the room, they sometimes think the mic is less directional. It isn’t, in fact the video mic is a better mic.
Granted, neither is world class.

No Problem.
Pro Tools is a recording environment. It has some plugin compressors. They are OK, but most folks get third party plugins. I own a Digi 002 and 003 and run Pro Tools 7.3. I like them.
I’d suggest you look at one of the 003 systems. It’s firewire. USB is a little too slow.
