My team is using Adobe Bridge quite successfully. All the library footage (on a network drive) has keywords in metadata that are introduced in Bridge. A search is really fast and easy.

January 19, 2011 at 10:37 am in reply to: Red One 4K footage and AE

I’ve done a few projects with RED 4k footage, and although the finished product was dumped on HD for most of them (one ended up as a 2k projected in a movie theater), most effects and grading where done at 4k. I was using CS4 at the time- latest upgrades from Adobe and RED. It gets a bit confusing when it comes to color management but nothing you can’t handle with a bit of reading. I would also recommend investing in CS5 and some RAM (that is if you have a 64 bit OS).

Usually if you have a 2d layer in between 3d layers (not on top or under)weird problems appear. It may not always be the case depending on how the 3d layers are set in z space. Here’s a link to a pretty good explanation on how mixing layers can affect your comp:

Do not mix 2D with 3D layers- AE does not like that. So if you have a 2d layer in between 3d layers, that may cause the problem.

Do you have OpenGL on? Turn that off.

There ya go- Dave and Walter covered everything. My suggestion, ask for file sequences (tiff, tga…) to be sure you get uncompressed stuff.

What compression do the .avi files use. What compression are you trying to render at? Do you have the latest CS3 updates installed?

January 18, 2011 at 4:56 pm in reply to: Rim light on alpha’d image

To obtain a true rim light effect you need a 3D logo with a light set behind. Using Zaxwerks Invigorator will get you there.
Also, if you duplicate the 2d logo layer, turn the bottom to white (use levels) and apply matte choker on the top layer, you may get something you can use.

January 18, 2011 at 2:59 pm in reply to: Trouble with Mocha

Your problem is not clear to me- are you trying a 3d track with Mocha? If that is so, then you can’t do that- Mocha is a planar tracker, 2d tracking. For any 3D data you need a 3d tracker- Boujou, Syntheyes, Camera Tracker or Voodoo.

Walter gave you pretty much all you need- here’s one more tip though:

In order to get clean frames to use when there’s a lot of motion you need to shoot at a higher frame rate.
