All the above advice is really good- I will add one more thing: when shooting chroma or any footage that you plan to use in post production/VFX try to use a HD camera and capture to a drive at least 4:2:2. A DSLR may shoot good looking footage but it compresses the color a lot and makes your post work hell.

While you may use AE to assemble your footage you should not render from AE for DVD. Open the AE comp in Adobe Media Encoder and use one of the MPEG2 presets for DVD.

  • That being said (Michael’s post)I think it’s worth taking a look at the new FreeForm Pro plugin from Mettle. It can not only do 3d displacement of a face/hand:

but now has also reflection mapping, so you may be able to use it to create what you need.

April 19, 2011 at 6:24 am in reply to: Clouds using Particle Simulator

Particular is capable of creating clouds- that’s for sure, but so much more. Maybe you should think about investing in this plugin. However, if budgets are tight, there’s a number of different ways in which you can do clouds. The trick is to design your effect after you are set on the camera moves. You can start by having multiple layers of real cloud images with alpha. For volume you can use Free Form (free with CS5) to do a 3d displacement of the cloud images.
Here’s a link to an example of using 2d layers to give the impression ov volume- the clouds show up at the bottom of the frame:

Here’s another example of using CC Particle World:

One question per post if you want to get answers- my advice.
The first video- not fast camera moves but a variety of fast animated radial blurs with whites crushed using Levels, Displacement and Distortion (maybe some Flow Motion)and just moving the frame up and down fast w/motion blur on to simulate film running off the spool.
Second- not sure what you mean.

    Let’s see-
    latest update to CS4?
new comp altogether in which you bring in all the rendered precomps and apply effects again- a pain, I know, but maybe…
    Clear the cache
    re-install AE…
That’s about all that comes to mind.

Does it behave like this with all sorts of comps or only with some?
I run into similar issues when I had 3d layers and motion blur working at 2k. I had to pre-render some parts of my comp to be able to fianlly render the whole thing.

April 16, 2011 at 9:20 am in reply to: Power Rangers Morph with After Effects

From your example it looks like the transition is done over a character that stands still- that makes it easy. If you do not have access to a 3d app, then you can draw a mesh in AI over a still that simulates a mesh render from a 3d program of the body. You comp that with alpha on top of your character, reveal it with a feathered mask and then use another animated mask to wipe it off. The same mask should be copied on the top layer that should have the character (shoot both instances on chroma) dressed in the desired final outfit shot in the exact same position. The edge of this mask should animate smoothly to give a more organic look. Animate a shape (white) to match the edge of transition. Apply Generate/Cell Pattern, CC Light Rays, Colorama…. and instead of spending a lot of time writing this I have attached a project for the edge transition using only AE plugins that come with CS4.
