I would create a mask with animated edges. A combination of the actual smoke revealing the text footage and an animated (to match the way the smoke moves) feathered mask applied to a white layer and underneath with expansion on a layer that has fractal noise animated on to match the speed of the moving smoke.

How are you affecting the footage? Did you try to use time remapping?

What size is your frame? Do you use OpenGL by chance? Can you post a screen shot?

H264 in QT does not do well with color interpretation when rendered out of AE. I would use the Animation render to compress from Adobe Media Encoder. You can get a much better result and Variable bit rate 2 pass encoding. That should do the trick. Weird though that VLC did not correctly interpret the color.

Do the colors look washed out in QT?
How about VLC?

Maybe I was not clear- not behind he actor- just lower it in the frame- giving the impression that is closer to the camera, and enlarge the elements in the comp by 7-10%. This will bring the base of the Standing Stone under the bottom of the frame eliminating the need for a shadow and making (in my opinion a better looking composition.
