I have that same sp3, and yes, the others are correct- it’s not ideal. But it actually surprised me by how well it does do with r3d media. Mine works fine with CC apps and 4/5kootage. I have realistic expectations that aren’t high, but for quick on-set checks and such, it’s actually exceeded my expectations. 6k is a bit of a drag, but others are more usable in my experience.
How does it ‘error out’ exactly? Are you importing via Media Browser or dragging from directories? Spanned clips? What frame rate? What res files?

July 30, 2014 at 6:41 am in reply to: Titles stretched after render, and in playback, but not on exportBtw, to fix, I copied and pasted my sequence into a new square pixel 1920×1080 sequence and that issue went away. But if you aren’t using previews for renders, it’s just a weird thing to look at while editing, disconcerting as it is.

I saw this a long time ago in like cs6 but almost never work in non square pixel timelines so forgot about it.

Have you tried just having both (or more) sequences open at the same time and ‘docked’ to one another? I can’t remember the official term for that. I do this quite often and it’s very handy. I usually just stack them on top of one another.

From what I can tell, PPro will only create a ‘kinda compliant’ CMX 3600 EDL. The EDL format dictates that it is only one layer, not Pr. Pr will create a sort of hacked CMX list with K events- events on additional layers should you try it, I’ve never quite understood what it is doing when it grabs those events. List with K events don’t work on most systems I’ve tried to import them into. At best those events are ignored, at worst the EDL import fails.
Any clip that you have on your timeline that has been rendered from or Dynamic Linked from AE will not bear any relationship to the original rush in the library for timecode or clip name/reel name or anything else, so you’ll have a event in your list that doesn’t mean anything (usually a BL event). This is normal behavior, if you want the list to reference the original clip, that clip has to be in the timeline on the track you’re targeting for the list.
As for speed change events (M2 events) if you do a straight speed change on the timeline, as long as they’re less than 999% if it’s a speed-up (another CMX limit), they should come through okay in my experience. However, if you’re using the speed ramp (with the bezier handles/curves on the timeline) those do not translate to a EDL at all, and they really hose the list in various other ways in my experience.
What’s the intent of using a EDL? A XML is a better option for many reasons if that will work for what you’re doing. Depending on what you’re doing with it, a AAF might be a option too, however I’ve had almost no luck with Pr AAF going into Avid systems, going into Quantel works better but not totally reliably with AAF. I usually still use a EDL, it’s old and ‘antiquated’ but it just works as long as you know the parameters you need to work within.

Okay, I now remember that what I was doing was copying from 23.976 HD sequence and pasting into a 29.97 HD sequence with upper fields and it worked fine. Then I output to tape and a downconvert was made for a DVD and SD deliverables. Old school, I know, but nevertheless my result was good with proper fields that I could step through in the 29.97 sequence just as if the sequence was a file ingested with pulldown in it. I’m monitoring through SDI via a BM Decklink card. It actually shocked me at the time as I’m used to seeing this in FCP with repeated 4th frame.
So I never actually tried to paste into a SD sequence, sorry should have read more closely. I’ll try it when I’m in front of my machine again.

If I remember correctly, you can create a 29.97 sequence (with fields) and copy and paste 23.976 footage into it and Pr will correctly insert 3:2. There are no handles I’m aware of to control this but it worked fine for me do exactly what you’re looking to do.

Hi Everyone,
Great info here!
I am looking into this as a solution for RED workflow and client monitoring and found all of this info really useful, I haven’t heard this kind of info out there yet.
We’re currently using BM Decklink cards for monitoring on MacPro’s and that’s really painful/unusable right now with RED footage. It works ‘okay’ with other workflows but even in a native BM sequence with native BM footage it’s just not like it should be or as it is in FCP with the same footage. To be fair, I’ve edited h.264 and other MPEG native using BM sequences which worked great and just isn’t possible in FCP, so there are some things working well with BM, it’s just slightly unpredictable feeling to me.
So I have a couple of Q’s for anyone re: the nVidia ‘way’: the Mac version of the 4000 doesn’t seem to have the SDI I/O daughter card support listed as available on nVidia’s website, so I guess we’d have to use HDMI or something as Dave suggested, right? Or do it all on a PC as that’s sounding a little more ‘stable’ with RED in particular, maybe?.
Dave (or anyone else for that matter), on the systems you’re working with, are you able to achieve any kind of remote deck control? Via Keyspan or any other way in PPro in conjunction with the nVidia cards? We are still in the HDSR world and will be for a long while I believe so that would be nice but not a show stopper.
I’d love to chat with anyone who has any experience with the nVidia digital video pipeline using their SDI card(s) especially after reading Dave’s post above! Sounds like bliss, especially with a RED Rocket along for the ride…
Thanks in advance,

I was watching this thread with interest… so disappointing. I too would love to have this feature back and have voiced this to BM on several occasions. I have two edit suites that are laid out with the ability to show desktop as a crucial feature to make it work well (ie: the clients don’t sit behind me with my computer and small broadcast scopes/monitors in their view- just a client monitor). Then it disappeared. Ugh. Please, please, please BM, bring extended desktop back! Please? Pretty please?

This doesn’t seem promising…. 🙁
I was hoping to hear “It’s on it’s way shortly”.
But I also hoped there might be more folks wanting the driver that might say so….
