Your project file is over 100GB!!! Or the project with all the assets?

    January 14, 2013 at 8:21 pm in reply to: auto-save isn’t working?

Ah ha. I found THIS in the Adobe help pages.

*****Note: Premiere Pro will only execute an auto save when there are unsaved changes in the currently opened project. This also applies when the program is in the background or minimized. The potential consequence for leaving a project open with unsaved changes for a long enough period of time is that eventually all of the auto save versions will become identical, wiping out potentially useful versions to roll back to. Adjust this preference according to your workflow or close Premiere Pro when you will be working on other applications for an extended period of time.****

So, what this means, is that if you are working on a project and start to make changes, the “countdown” begins. If you manually save, then the “countdown” starts over. If, however, the countdown reaches your time limit set in the auto-save preference, then PP will automatically save the file.

I like this. Seems like it should work like this. However, what happens next, as described in the later part of that paragraph, is bothersome and not intuitive or helpful:

If you make changes and do not manually save, auto save will save the file. If you are checking email or go to a meeting or go to the bathroom to take your morning do-do, and you forgot to save, auto-save will kick in. HOWEVER, if you are taking a long do-do or whatever, autosave will continue to save every 10-minute or whatever, until you manually do a save. How this is NOT GOOD is after a couple of hours, you may have 12 autosave files that are all identical. You may even no longer have actual backups of the file in the autosave folder.

Seems to me that once a save has been made, whether auto save or manual save, the countdown times should not be activated. Seems like a simple line of code.

I understand this. But that doesnt explain why sometimes the auto saves seem to go every 8 minutes and why sometimes it’s 40 minutes between auto saves. Also doesn’t explain why it will save a file, even if I do nothing.

Another way to do this is using the SEARCH field in the adobe dialogue box. Search for the name of the offline media (It tells you at the top). You will most likely have several show up because you most likely have more than one project or more than one camera card. You can figure it out by date maybe.

Anyway, I’ve had this happen to me on the same project more than once. Not sure why I keep having to do this. It’s a rather larger project with over 2000 assets of pictures and video and audio so it takes a while Rather annoying CS6 is.

In case anyone comes here looking for a solution, I have one.

I called tech support and spent a couple of hours. The recommendation was to unistall the creative suite and reinstall from the cloud. That took some time. When it was done, I was able to launch Adobe media encoder.

Background. I had purchased a used MBP. It already had the adobe suite on it. I then purchased the adobe suite creative cloud subscription. So, even though the programs were on my computer, they weren’t necessarily registered to me (except for the lightroom app I had installed after I subscribed). So, this may not be the same background as you and this may not solve your problem, but it solved mine.

However, it also created a problem. Next time I opened a premiere project, my mts files (from a panasonic a f100) had become unlinked. And because I’m on Mountain Lion, you can’t just navigate to the specific mts file (Mountain Lion does something strange to the AVCHD file structure). So, another call to tech support and they were able to type the name of the file in the search field in the re-link window and I was able to find that file.

  • I’m browsing because I’m a recent convert from FCP. I’m desperate for help as the transition for me from FCP to PP has been pretty unpleasant.

  • [Dan Schneider] “What’s going on here? Am I missing something?”

    Yeah, you’re using Premiere Pro.

Oops, did I say that out loud? I don’t mean to be a hater. But I think I am.

January 8, 2013 at 1:26 am in reply to: Auto Save crap

As for the auto-save folder. Only thing there is stuff from the week prior, the last time I worked on the file. I’ve noticed that if I’m saving often, then the auto-save doesn’t kick in. I’m used to saving every few minutes. Just 20 years of working with computers has made me learn to save often. Anyway, last friday, I don’t have ONE auto-save file, I think because I kept saving every few minutes (more often than the time frame of the auto-save.).

So, with PP, it’s best NOT to save at all until you’re done and exiting PP. That way, auto-save will automatically incrementally save your project. I know doesn’t seem intuitive. Certainly not like that with any other program on the planet, namely FCP. I miss FCP. I miss FCP.

I’ve read somewhere that people where having this corrupted file thing specifically on project files that were in a dropbox folder. But you’re right, a dropbox type of thing would be beneficial for this, as I don’t typically keep my time machine on all day for hourly backups. It’s usually more of a every week or every few days kind of thing.
