I’m so pissed right now! Auto-save not working? Why? I worked last friday on a project for about 3-4 hours. Now i’m getting the message:

The Project could not be loaded. it may be damaged or contain outdated elements.

Of course, I’m upset. I tried creating a new project and imported the “bad” one. Same message. Ok, go to auto save, not there. Nothing from last Friday there. This is complete BS. I swear, just one more reason to hate that I switched from FCP to PP. One more thing to go wrong.

Trevor, sorry to hear about your troubles. I’m sorry I won’t be able to help you get your project back, but hopefully I can help figure out what went wrong.

Going forward, I’d suggest adding some service like DropBox or Backblaze, both of which copy your files to the cloud and let you recover old versions.

What is there? Did it stop auto-saving, or is it filled with newer auto-saves?

You may also need to run a “repair permissions” on whatever disk you have the auto-save vault set to as the folder the auto-save is attempting to write to may have gotten its permissions messed up, thereby stopping it from the ability to write a new file there.

If that’s the case….it would be nice if PPro notified you of that!

Sorry for the lost work. That sucks. I always tell my team – Save Early. Save Often. And Save in Versions.

Saving in versions on your local disks sort of creates your own backup as you go. But Walter’s idea is great as well…using a Dropbox service to backup select folders that contain your project files.

I’ve read somewhere that people where having this corrupted file thing specifically on project files that were in a dropbox folder. But you’re right, a dropbox type of thing would be beneficial for this, as I don’t typically keep my time machine on all day for hourly backups. It’s usually more of a every week or every few days kind of thing.

As for the auto-save folder. Only thing there is stuff from the week prior, the last time I worked on the file. I’ve noticed that if I’m saving often, then the auto-save doesn’t kick in. I’m used to saving every few minutes. Just 20 years of working with computers has made me learn to save often. Anyway, last friday, I don’t have ONE auto-save file, I think because I kept saving every few minutes (more often than the time frame of the auto-save.).

So, with PP, it’s best NOT to save at all until you’re done and exiting PP. That way, auto-save will automatically incrementally save your project. I know doesn’t seem intuitive. Certainly not like that with any other program on the planet, namely FCP. I miss FCP. I miss FCP.
