I used this camera for the first time about a month ago. The first day I had the same problem. I’ve always prided myself on having super steady shots with handheld cameras. After about a day of shooting, I figured out that if you lean your head against the side of the camera body, you’ll essentially have created a tripod, with 3 points of stability: your head, your shoulder, and your hand on the lens.You gotta keep your head against the body.

Why is MXF a more surefire way to archive the clips?

Ok. So I guess the step you are leaving out is the archiving step. In other words, in my scenario, you are skipping step one. In a situation where I’ll be using cards and downloading them onto a hard drive and immediately using the cards again, I’ll want 2 copies of the files. It seems that a lot of people in the P2 world first make a copy of the contents of the card onto one HD. Then they “transfer” the video clips onto their scratch disk.
It seems in your case, you’re doing the steps in the opposite order. First your “transferring” the video clips onto a scratch disk, and then at some later time, making a backup of the clips. And I suppose if you have a RAID 1 or something, you would have to make the copy, since the RAID would be doing that for you. And really, this scenario works for P2 or SxS.
Thanks for your feedback. It only makes my decision harder.

Is this the time to transfer from the card onto the hard drive or the time to copy the file from MXF to Quicktime (log and transfer encoding in FCP)?

Really? I thought the files that come off the SxS card are some sort of MXF files that need to be converted before FCP can edit them.

Ok, thank’s. you make a good point about the reel. And also a good point about relinking the subtitles. I’m not too worried about that because the amount of work there is minor compared to the rest of the project. Also, I could create my new subtitles BEFORE (on top of) I unlink and reconnect media. I also think I might “burn in” the timecode as well as the subtitles on the first pass.

DV NTSC 48 khz. That’s the preset to use. 720×480 IS NTSC material and IS 60 interlaced fields per second. You will NOT lose any information as that is exactly how it’s encoded onto the tapes.

Again, just to clarify, I’m not asking anything about 1080 vs. 720 vs film vs SD in RESOLUTION. This is a question about DELIVERABLE FRAME RATES for a final product. I understand there’s a debate about resolution. I understand that for capturing you may want to undercrank or overcrank. This is a question of WHY would someone want to shoot at 60 progressive frames per second, other than over cranking? Is it because there are different deliverables? (see below) or is it because they just like the look they get with 60 progressive frames per second over 24 progressive frames per second or 30 interlaced frames per second?
1. Broadcast SD: 29.97 frames per second, interlaced.
2. Broadcast 1080i HD: ???
3. Broadcast 720p HD: ???

Is there much of a difference between using a ripping program vs running RCA cables from a DVD player into a firewire capture (like through my camera) and capturing the “live feed?”

Sorry. Didn’t mean to offend you. It’s not that I think your plug in is no good. I haven’t used it. But usually I can tell if a program was meant for 4×3 and then partially stretched to fill 16×9. My church does it. Actually the TV’s do it automatically. Samsung. They look like I’m watching something on a fun house with those crazy mirrors. Like I said, I’d prefer the whole thing stretched or the whole thing cropped.
