    HVX200 does it too.

At risk of engaging in theological discussion, I always found Premiere faster for editing than FCP. I have mastered the keyboard for both, but FCP always had me hunting around the UI to find something for cutting, while Premiere just has everything in front of me.

What is it you are TRYING to do so that this question is easier to answer. As it is, they are all good editing tools, but what specific need do you have? That would make answering what system you need a little easier.

I have had my share of bad crashes and troubles with CS4 but overall I find the app stronger than CS3 (and FCP) in many ways. Unfortunately the advantage of cost, that we gained from installing it on homebrew, cheap hardware, doesn’t work anymore. You really need a great system, custom and dedicated to the software to make it work well enough to really work all day on it. I’d have gone crazy if I didn’t finally just upgrade to a monster system running 64 bit Windows 7.

Everything works GREAT on this system. The only troubles I still get are with my black magic design card, but in their defense (which I never am) this is their first Win 7 rev of drivers.

CS4 works flawlessly in all applications.

I wish that it were true that CS4 could just work across all hardware platforms in all the possible iterations, but it just can’t. The trade off in power and versatility as an editing system makes us compromise in the cheapness and randomness of our hardware.

They’ve done a great job in bringing the software up to date, just not the hardware compatibility. I know this doesn’t help, but know that like you I have suffered and have found my way. Consider new and dedicated hardware OS combo. Or go mac!

I agree with the question of “what is it you can’t do now?”. That’s a big one. Vegas is pretty decent, unless you are concerned with the lack of “Pro” cred.

I use Premiere Pro and find it to be faster and more intuitive than Final Cut, but I have used both extensively. Both have a lot of third party options that do wonderful things. Avid is awesome if you have the money, but Premiere delivers the goods on the PC platform, while I’d go with Final Cut if you are on mac.

Adobe Production Premium has all the stuff you need to get rolling.

As far as the “Jhonny Come Lately” thing: I know how frustrating it is to find new business in today’s cheap and fast web contented world. It’s not at all like Broadcast but is IS a new market. Don’t let those that are frustrated bring you down. If you love doing this kind of work, better to make a penny loving what you do than a pile of cash with something you hate. Don’t let people who are already discouraged, discourage you in turn. Just go out there to do the best job you can. Alternately, if you aren’t suited for video, find someone local to help you out. Maybe a local video editor has a charitable sensibility for your particular non-profit.

One workflow that I use is to run the P2 off to DVCPROHD tape. That could work for you if you need physical media for the firm. I agree that you should verify with your legal client. Might just be cheaper to buy a 2k $ HDV camera. I doubt legal clients care more about video quality than they do following proper procedure.

There is something related and more problematic happening that doesn’t get mentioned much:

There isn’t enough transparency in the release notes for the drivers.

I for one have been disappointed by the lack of transparency and the reticence of the development team to include actual useful notes in the release README. Most often, they simply jot in “performance improvements” instead of declaring which bugs were fixed and what functional changes were made.

I would very much like to see more information in the future, it would help users to know what the change is really going to do. I usually don’t change drivers unless it fixes an issue for me, which has always been safer, but since i’m riddled with bugs from BMD drivers and never get accurate change information from the notes, I am forced to accept whatever comes with a driver update.

As far as RTFM, this is the issue. There’s no FM to R.

October 11, 2009 at 9:21 am in reply to: WMV export quality not satisfactory

Thank you for seconding the workflow from AVI to WMV, Tim, my suspicion is that the issue lies within the adobe media encoder. I’ve used premiere since before the pro series and sadly, WMV continues to suffer. I use dynamic linking constantly but I have to jump through many hoops to create output the way I expect it to be.

  • If you have the pro suite, you can use dynamic link to export from premiere into AE and have it automatically update.

You just select the item you want to send to AE and “replace with AE composition” even more awesome, if AE is already open it will put the comp into the current file.

It will even remember your edit points for you. It has been a million times useful for me. So far, however, it doesn’t play back very well in real time, so i tend to export a final and put it in place as a native format rather than the dynamic link when I am done with my edits.

Not it. Like I think I mentioned, when it’s playing on the timeline, it’s fine and it’s coming out of my BMD card badly, not the source monitor or program monitor.

I’ve tried too many combinations to mention. Start with the first one that comes up under windows media “High Quality NTSC download” and see the magical results on all fine lines.
