You could make a compound clip in your event and put anything in there, it’s is own little timeline.

    How’s that?

The behavior you are seeing is actually completely dependent on how the transition was created. Ripple for example will effect the entire frame. Cross dissolve will not. Depending on the settings “slide” will or will not include the background clip.

What specific transition are you using, can you give a screen shot of what you are trying to accomplish? I’m sure we can figure it out.

March 13, 2012 at 7:55 pm in reply to: NVidia GeForce GTX 285 Sluggish Performance

[Don Smith] “My graphics card is an NVidia GeForce GTX 285.

FCPX runs like a stubborn mule.”

Although I haven’t done any systematic testing, from what I have gathered here and around the web, the ATI cards seem to do best with FCP X. I’m on a 2006 MacPro with a ATI Radeon 5770 and for the most part it is buttery smooth.

However, can you expound upon the mule like behavior? Is this happening all the time in FCP X, or only when you perform certain operations. Why kind of projects are you doing (straight cuts, lots of effects etc.) and how many events & projects are you leaving active at the same time? What kind of drives and connection are you using for your events/projects?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

Exports via Compressor are slower because Compressor doesn’t yet use the GPU. On the other hand exports direct from FCP X the GPU is utilized and you should see a nice speedup.

Also, tell me a bit more about your project. Do you have background rendering turned on, i.e. are you exporting unrendered?

What type of filters, color correction do you have applied to the footage, or is it just simple cuts?

What results to you get with your 3 minute test with optimized if you export ProRes 1080p directly from FCP X?

March 9, 2012 at 7:37 pm in reply to: 70’s Horror Colour

That is a beautiful retro look. Flat, compressed highlights and shadows, slightly warm. Lots of grain. However, there is a lot more to this than dialing in the color in post. In fact the color treatment is just icing on a well constructed cake.

I think if you want to try to get the look and feel there are a number of things to consider how they originally shoot the film.

    – Lens
    – Film Stock
    – Processing Technique
    – Makeup
    – Lighting (the harsh lighting of the chalkboard shot with Dustin Hoffman is classic)

I would research those aspects and then start shooting some tests. Work with your DP and perhaps recreate a shot or two in that film you noted. Also to study what is happening with the color grade, grab some of those still frames, balance the color and try to make them “match” what is coming from your camera. You’ll learn a lot about the characteristics of the color.

    I hope this helps!

  • Coincidently I have been investigating this for several days. Yes this is an issue with 10.0.3. I think it a bug, because it really does cause a problem with many workflows, especially editing during playback (see my tutorial here https://library.creativecow.net/payton_t/FCPX_Editing-During-Playback/1)

There are several other timeline redraw problems beyond this one. Specifically audio waveforms are not redrawing based on audio filter changes, and using the razor blade, or multicam cut and switch will also remove the filmstrips and audio waveforms.

I say this is a bug, because If you look carefully at the multicam demo video here you will noticed that the version that was used to make the video didn’t remove the filmstrip during multi cam switching.

I reported this to Apple. You might want to not just give feedback, but give them a call also and ask them about it.

It should all just be there already in the Music Tab:

  • Indeed. And you can always use “Consolidate Project media files” or “Organize Event Files” and anything that was not in your Event folder will now be copied to it.

I’m sorry Michael I didn’t actually answer your question 😉 The 7D should work very well. There have been several tests done in Vimeo. For example

    https://vimeo.com/7964527
    https://vimeo.com/7954098

I failed to mention that my HDV keying project was projected on a 15 ft screen and looked very good. Therefore because of the inheritant quality advantages a 7D codec has over HDV, I would concluded that the 7D footage will pull a very good key, IF it is lit correctly.

However, of course nothing can replace your own testing with your lighting setup, lens, etc. and projected on the largest screen you can get a hold of.
