  • Disappearing Timeline Graphics When Scrolling During Playback

Posted by Philip Davies on March 5, 2012 at 5:31 pm

I’ve noticed this more using multicam but it was there before…

Whilst playing back the timeline, when the playhead disappears off the screen to the right and I scroll across to reveal more of the timeline, both the audio peaks and images (of the footage) disappear from the timeline (I just get a plain green band for audio and plain blue band for video).

As soon as I pause playback, the timeline graphics appear. It’s as though FCX can’t load the graphics for what was hidden to the right whilst in playback.

Ideally, the timeline should scroll horizontally to track the payhead, unless I’ve missed a setting for that.

This used to happen sporadically on two separate computers, but it’s now occuring all the time so I’m wondering if it’s an 10.0.3 thing?

Coincidently I have been investigating this for several days. Yes this is an issue with 10.0.3. I think it a bug, because it really does cause a problem with many workflows, especially editing during playback (see my tutorial here https://library.creativecow.net/payton_t/FCPX_Editing-During-Playback/1)

There are several other timeline redraw problems beyond this one. Specifically audio waveforms are not redrawing based on audio filter changes, and using the razor blade, or multicam cut and switch will also remove the filmstrips and audio waveforms.

I say this is a bug, because If you look carefully at the multicam demo video here you will noticed that the version that was used to make the video didn’t remove the filmstrip during multi cam switching.

I reported this to Apple. You might want to not just give feedback, but give them a call also and ask them about it.

Encouraging to hear its not just me.

Coming from Sont Vegas, I’m used to the time line scrolling with the play head. Has this never been a feature of Final Cut or something omitted in X?
