[Oliver Peters] “most of these editors are not nearly as “plugged in” as those of us on forums like this. They really don’t have the time to get deep into anything other than the films or shows they are working on unless they are in between projects.”
Agree completely

[Andrew Kimery] “X has been in the wild a few years now, and there’s a lot of good resources online too, so I don’t think you need to worry about beating out every negative brushfire”
I disagree a little here Andrew. In my personal experiences the far majority of conversations go like this…..
Me: Have you tried FCP X?
Them: No. I heard nothing but bad things about it.
Even at this late date. Just spoke with a guy from LA last week who is still sitting there on 7.
He said he heard bad things. It’s pretty much like that every time. When I start to describe what I like about it they get interested and want to at least try it.
I get Bill’s style because I’m the same way in politics. I’m not looking to bring that person over that made up their mind. I’m talking past them to people who are standing around listening who are on the fence.

What’s the trend there at your place Neil? Are they expanding editing jobs there? Maintaining the same or cutting?

[Michael Phillips] “The other challenge is growing the number of seats, and that means competing with Resolve, Adobe and FCPx to feed that Marketplace. And that is a huge challenge.”
I agree with this. In my market AVID is in the same facilities that it has been in for years, but the three newest facilities went with Pr
They have not been able to expand their base here.
Anybody that has worked in this biz for more than 20 years knows the trend has been to go smaller and smaller. That means fewer and fewer people. As in, one person do EVERYTHING so we don’t have to pay any workers.
The question is, will this trend continue (I think we all know the answer) and if it does what will editing look like.
AVID works great in a shared environment but who will you share with when there are just a hand full of people left at the station.
The last baseball game I worked, out of the 3 laptops running in the truck, 2 were X and one Legend.
AVID has got to find a way into this current trend of cut on the run, individual/smaller market place.

[Morten Ranmar] “Resolve does offer a single button to disable all grading.”
Morten, can’t you do this in X by just clicking the top Effects button?
-
[Neil Goodman] “The difference being R11 is very much so deeply integrated in the post production workflow in LA at least…for coloring. Its main focus. Still alot TBD for its editing capabilities. “
Are there a lot of job postings for people to edit with R11 outside LA?
I’m asking, I don’t know.
I know more people around here using X than R11
I don’t know of anybody looking to pay somebody to cut something on R11 around here.
That’s not to say that people shouldn’t cut with it if they like it. Same as any other NLE
I don’t really pay much attention to job postings.
I get all my work from referrals. Seems for folks that have been in the game for a while, they do the same and get their rate.
The folks that did FOCUS said they will do their next film on X
That will come and go also like other films do.

[Andrew Kimery] ” footage that meanders pointlessly all over the place like someone just strapped the camera onto the head of Jack Russell Terrier.”
hahahaha love it : )
[Andrew Kimery] “I see BM trying to expand their footprint in places that already work with Resolve in some capacity”
Totally agree
-
[Andrew Kimery] “Was? ;)”
hahaha I mean like nobody was going to use it in Hollywood, Like, on a film like FOCUS : ))
[Andrew Kimery] “I would be surprised though if no one in your area is using Resolve 11 “
I don’t know if they are or not. At least I haven’t seen anybody using it at any stations I work at or production houses I have been in.
All I see is AVID, Pr, and X and people grade in those.
The other thing I see and hear, are people complaining about bad footage.
They don’t say “great! an opportunity for me to grade” More like “Who shot this mess”
I love to grade myself, but I hear editors complain all the time about how something was shot poorly.
“so and so didn’t white balance the camera” “so and so overexposed this or that”
If you don’t bring in footage that looks near perfect your work is shunned by most editors around here.
I actually had an editor say to me just the other day “what I like about what you shoot is that I don’t have to do anything to it”
What I see are editors that want to cut their spots fast and get them on the air and get out the door so they can double dip for another client that same day.
They are looking to get 2 paychecks in one day instead of sitting there grading for one.
I certainly don’t hear anybody saying they are gong to give up what they love to cut on so they can grade more.
That’s honestly what I see, and I know that’s not unique to this area.

Remember how the rub on X was that nobody was using it in the industry?
There were no job postings for it so what was the point?
Well, nobody in my town is using R12. Heck, not only is nobody using it, but nobody is even talking about it.
I’m all for R12 and anybody else that wants to through in.
It just brings a little smile to my face that’s all : )

[Scott Witthaus] “I would rather eliminate the roundtrip altogether and stay in X.”
I would also Scott. I think a lot of people would. I think that’s the whole point behind Resolve’s move in the first place.
As more and more people stay in their chosen NLE and use the grading tools right inside there (or plugins) in there, Resolve becomes more and more irrelevant.
That is……..UNLESS…………you become your own NLE.
I thought it was ironic that in one of the videos that was posted on here, the guy that was demoing it said something like”we want you to stay inside this program for everything”
I’m sure that’s the goal of all of these NLEs
I know it would be my goal if I ran the zoo.
Once you go out you may not come back : )
