Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply. Yes I did try a while ago as you suggest and it still caused problems. In the end, because I only use the software in a very simple way, I went back to version 4.5 and it worked fine.
I suspect there was an installation glitch with version 5 which I will look into in due course when time permits.
Once again thanks for your reply.

Hi Susan, glad to hear you sorted out the problem. However, would it be possible for you to give me a link to the solution. I worked out two possible solutions and would like to know if there is a ‘proper’ way to do it. Thanks.
Also, you may be interested in the following site
I found that this site is by far the most useful if you use Vegas Movie Studio, Vegas and DVD Architect. It is not free but you can join monthly or annually. If the latter you get two DVDs, one on VMS and the other on DVDA. These DVDs are not teach you or tutorial types but a series of screencasts showing you how to do things. As a member, if there isn’t a screencast to solve your problem you can request one. The site is run by a chap, Gordon White, here in England. I totally recommend it.
Good luck

Hello Susan,
I can well understand your frustration. As you can see, it is over 2 years since I wrote that post and never did get a reply.
The answer to your question is that I did solve the problem after a lot of failures but the explanation is too long to put in a post. I would be very happy to help if you give me your email address. Please let me know. My email address is DOCANDDI@BTINTERNEt.COM

Many thanks Edward for such a prompt reply.
Your point 1) was precisely what I did. I found I could convert to WMV files which I was able to load and edit. However I would still like to know, if possible, why the AVI files wouldn’t load properly because I would prefer to edit that type because I understand they don’t deteriorate in editing.
I believe your point 2) holds the key but I simply do not know enough to do anything about it. How do I find what is the correct codec? How do I find which are used by my version of Vegas? How do I instal them and from where do I get them? Is there anything I can read to learn about them? So many questions – I would be grateful just to be pushed in the right direction to read an appropriate article etc.
As for your point 3), I would never have thought of that. I will certainly give it a go.
I know I’m asking an awful lot but I would be most grateful for any help.
Many Thank

Many thanks Edward for your reply. Although I said I was new to Vegas, which is true, I’m far from new to computing in general. I realised that playback/preview involved the interpretation of the ‘effects’ etc on the ‘fly’ so to speak (in the same way as an interpreted computer languages work).
In answer to your question there are ‘effects etc’ in the previewed clips I’m using. If it is basically this that causes the jittery playback then I’m satisfied just to understand that. If there is anything I could do to lessen the effect please let me know.
Many thanks.

Hi Edward, many thanks for your post which, of course, did what I wanted. I just wonder how I might have found the answer by searching the manual and help files etc which I did as much as I could but without any success. The answer, at least to me, seems unrelated to my problem.
Once again, many thanks for your trouble.
