  • Loading AVI in Vegas 6

I received 5 family DVD videos from a relative which I wish to edit and produce a compilation. I used WINAVI to convert the VOB files to AVI type for editing purposes. I found that although the AVI files played perfectly in Windows Media player among others, only the audio track, if any, would load into Vegas 6.0 even though they would completely load into Nero, Adobe Premier and Windows Movie Maker. Since Vegas is my prefered editor, I would welcome any idea as to what may be wrong and any solution to the preblem. I am very new to this work so a simple explanation would be appreciated.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

You used WinAVI and converted them into a video format Vegas can’t read. You do have some choices:

    1. Convert them to a format Vegas CAN read
    2. Find the proper codec needed for Vegas to read the already converted files.
    3. Make sure you’re using the most current version of Vegas 6, put the DVD into the drive, and choose File – Import – DVD Camcorder Disc and let Vegas import the DVD for you.

    I prefer #3.

Many thanks Edward for such a prompt reply.

Your point 1) was precisely what I did. I found I could convert to WMV files which I was able to load and edit. However I would still like to know, if possible, why the AVI files wouldn’t load properly because I would prefer to edit that type because I understand they don’t deteriorate in editing.

I believe your point 2) holds the key but I simply do not know enough to do anything about it. How do I find what is the correct codec? How do I find which are used by my version of Vegas? How do I instal them and from where do I get them? Is there anything I can read to learn about them? So many questions – I would be grateful just to be pushed in the right direction to read an appropriate article etc.

As for your point 3), I would never have thought of that. I will certainly give it a go.

I know I’m asking an awful lot but I would be most grateful for any help.

    Many Thank

As good as it is, there are still numerous variations of AVIs that Vegas can’t, for a wide variety of reasons, can’t read.
Just ask anyone who’s tried to load an “AVI” from a digital still camera. Turns out it’s actually an MJPEG codec that you need to install to be able to read it properly in Vegas.

Edward mentioned the File – Import – DVD Camcorder Disc option and, in your situation, that’s what I would use.
I’ve done this numerous times and it works well.
Another good reason for doing it this way is that you avoid another stage of de-compression/re-compression and, as you’ve discovered, doing what you’re doing can knock your quality level down, in some cases a lot.
