You can create a “Compound Clip” in your Event and copy the clip you want to export into it. Then just export the new Compound Clip (Command + E). For now, I like having a Compound Clip in my Events called “Temp for Exports” and use it for stuff like you are asking about. Until we can set in and out points in the timeline it’s this method or using the “Send to Compressor” command and setting the in and out there. Maybe someone on here has figured out a better way.

    [Michael Colin]
Reference movies have been a CRITICAL part of my workflow for years. It’s the dirty little secret I’ve always kept from producers who are SO impressed at how I can work in FCP while also working in Compressor, DVDSP, After Effects, etc. This is one of my biggest disappointments with the new version.”

You can still “Send to Compressor” in FCP X and continue working so that’s one plus.

Just out of curiosity, do you like Reference Movies just because of the fast exports from FCP? With the speed of most MACS these days, exporting a timeline in Self-Contained takes just minutes on HD ProRes shows under an hour. I just think for me because of working with multiple editors that having a flattened file anyone can open without the fear of not having the referenced material is well worth the wait. I’ve had to re-export out so many referenced movies because of that, and the amount of time to find the right edit, if it even still exists, is not fun or a good use of time.

Converting DSLR footage to ProRes the last few years, I’ve yet to see a noticeable drop in quality. ProRes is a very solid codec and since FCP X is built around it, it will give you the smoothest editing situation. I won’t go into details here as this has been discussed to death on the forums but h.264 was not made to be an edit-friendly codec. It’s highly compressed and made for delivery and therefore eats a lot of CPU/GPU resources to edit on the fly. But FCP X has made huge strides in using every ounce of your computer’s power to help in that area and will only get better with Lion.

Also, from my understanding, FCP X now renders everything at 32-bit floating point (instead of 8 or 10 like before) so that will help keep quality up. Even if you edit h.264 natively, it is still being converted to ProRes in the background anytime you add effects. I can see that you are worried about converting to ProRes first and then converting to ProRes again when adding effects but like I said earlier, ProRes is a solid codec and you now have 32-bit floating point rendering so you’ll be fine. For me at least, I’d rather gain smoothness in editing until I upgrade to the latest and greatest MAC and Lion that may handle h.264 as well as native ProRes.

  • [Nate Weaver] “The 90 minute render took 48 hours. :)”

Sounds about right. Not that I love Compressor, but it can do a good job sometimes, even if it takes it jolly ‘ol time. Sad to hear about your issues with Terenex.

  • So still trying to find flaws in this approach and not sure if this counts as one.

When you create a Project and add clips from more than one Event in the Project Properties Tab there is a setting called “Reference Events”. I have yet to find an equivalent for Compound Clips. You can view a list of the clips in the Compound Clips Properties tab but you can’t seem to “Modify Event References” like you can with a FCP X Project.

So I moved Events around to different drives, trying to get the Compound Clip to lose reference to the various clips but haven’t gotten it to break yet. So what it seems like with Compound Clips is you may lose the ability to “reorder Events if duplicates are in Events” in order for FCP X to use a certain duplicate and not the first one it finds on its own. Does this make since to anyone?

Well Sears of all places says it’s in stock. A bit more expensive than usual but far less than a grand. Worth a shot if you think it’s legit and call them about it:

  • You’re right Nate. Just exported another 720/59.94 clip and it’s correct. Whew! My mind just thought it saw it wrong last night since it’s so used to it in FCP 7. =)

And when you were talking about 30p issues I read that backwards, as in putting 29.97 footage in 23.98. That’s when you need a Teranex. And I tested a 23.98 clip in a 30p timeline in FCP X and it’s correct, too, just like Gary mentioned.

Think I need to get some sleep.

Create a Compound Clip in the Event and use it as a Mini-Project to store all your select. We’re having a discussion about Compound Clips over here if you want to take a look:
