thanks for responding, I agree, exporting/rendering then re-importing seems to be the only way around this issue, unfortunately even the “render to new track” seems a little buggy, sometimes it works other times it exhibits strange behaviour like rendering only the first few seconds of video but rendering all the audio so you end up with a very strange looking new clip.
Doing a full export though does work, just a little clunky. I hope we see this limitation addressed in future releases.

many thanks john, decided to just stick with WinDV which seems to be working ok on Win 7. I realised that the only thing that was “annoying” WinDV in the first place was the EPU-4 software running on my PC (Asus mobo) that was switching the monitor off after 20 minutes for power save. As it turned out this power saving was also causing Vegas to foul up too.

As John mentioned “If HDVSplit is working for you then you are better off. The Sony HDV capture has some bugs in it that cause frames from other clips to get mixed-in while frames at the end get lost to the next clip when it splits.”
I just did an A/B comparison of capturing HDV footage from my HV40 using first Sony Vegas Plat and secondly HDVSplit. I noticed that there would be a millisecond mute in the audio at the start and at the end of each clip captured by Vegas yet there were no such breaks or “stutters” from the corresponding HDVSplit clip. Generally this might not be a problem if you are fading and trimming, however if you just want to drop a tape down to DVD or something you would end up with a nasty “audio stutter” every scene change.
Seems like HDVSplit is the way to go. Many thanks to john for his advice.

I think you might well be correct there John, i don’t believe you can export in HDV from Sony Vegas Studio. However its worth mentioning that generally my projects are exported in DVD or DivX for final viewing so it doesn’t matter to me much. In any case I daresay I’ll be upgrading before long, there does seem to be quite a few advantages in Plat for not much more £££

Turns out that Sony Vegas Studio 9 won’t capture HDV footage. If I lock the output of the HV40 to “DV” then the capture works fine, however this means that the camera is “downsampling” the HDV to DV so isn’t what I really need.
I installed an eval copy of vegas platinum on the same computer and could capture HDV from the HV40 with no issues.
As a general point though, HDVSplit allows you to capture HDV, and Sony Vegas Studio 9 does seem to allow you to import and edit HDV footage so unless you really need the extra features of the more expensive packages (platinum etc) then it would appear that you can still create HDV projects just with the cheaper Studio version of vegas.

Good spot, and is something I’d also noticed a while back, however what’s interesting is that I am able to edit the HDV clips (once on the PC courtesy of HDVSplit) within Move Studio 9 without any problems. Which suggests they didn’t lock up the HDV code as well as they’d thought.
Perhaps I’ll load one of my older SD tapes into the HV40 tonite and see how I get on with capturing. It doesn’t “feel” like an HDV vs DV thing but who knows.

I wasn’t aware that there were two options, I only recall seeing one entry in the File Menu for “capture from tape” which then launches what appears to be a separate application. (unfortunately I’m at work right now and can’t check).
I might point out I have captured HDV from a Sony Z1 using this computer previously but that was with the eval copy of Platinum. I don’t remember there being 2 options in Plat either. I decided to purchase the cheaper studio version of vegas since I didn’t think I’d need the surround sound stuff that comes with platinum.

Many thanks for your responses fellas. I think I will stick with the method I was using (ie track composite envelopes). As these things usually go once you’ve done it a few times it becomes second nature…
Good idea about adding the flash transition for the photo-effect btw, I take it your intention was that the flash effect would negate the need for a crossfade?
