It’s a safe bet that the stills are your main problem. FCP likes 72dpi stills, under 2k in frame size, and .png role file type. Also, you need to split the project up and keep the project size smaller. 35mg isn’t usually too large but when project files get too large, FCP starts having fits. Work in smaller projects and combine finished sequences if you need o keep it all together for the final.

Open each LiveType project and make a duplicate. Make your changes, and save as with a new title that reflects the change. Then import the new titles into your current project, duplicate the original timeline (and rename with revision in title), replace the LiveType titles with the new ones, re-render and viola!
Always a good idea to make duplicates so you don’t accidentally overwrite the originals.

Try taking the stills into photoshop and taking the image size down to under 3k x 3k, the. Saving them as .png. For some reason FCP likes .png much better than anything else.

There is an option that you must first select in order for it to work. You can also choose how long the handles are.

FCP’s media manager does just what you’re looking for. Do a search for how to use it, or dig up your manual. BTW, this is for FCP 6 / 7. Won’t work on FCP X.

I picked up a Sony DVD recorder on buy.com for $69 and just plug the VCR right into it and hit record. Works great, and every time. I can even have it put in chapter markers every 5,10, or 15 minutes! Quick and dirty. Just an option.

In fact, I’d make each student have thier own FireWire external and put everything on that! FCP projects are completely portable that way and they can take it home with them and plug in and continue work! FW drives may be adequate but not fast enough for more complex work when using any flavor of HD. I would try to make sure the drive they select is a 7200rpm drive!
