You may have a corrupted project file. Or you may have many, many sequences open. Or you may have edited portions of long sequences into other sequences, multiple times.

Try opening a recent project from the autosave vault. If you have have a lot of sequences open, close the Canvas, before you close the project.

Don’t cut sequences into pieces for use in other sequences.

Leave the project open and don’t shut down the application.

Does that shoot true 24p, or 24p at 29.97?

I’m surprised it works as I’ve never seen it work on anything but DV.

Rendering the clips will make no difference. Operation not allowed can happen if there are not enough handles for the transition, or if there is a track conflict. There may be other reasons. The FCP error message are notorious vague and cryptic.

AFAIK DV Start/Stop Detect only works with DV or DVCAM material.

This is range check function. Toggle it on and off with Control-Z. The diagonal lines are called zebra. (PC user come over to the Mac?)

Drag In and Out points from the Viewer to the Timeline???? Does not compute. Do you mean dragging a clip from the Viewer to the Timeline? Snapping red bowtie links? Do you mean two pairs of inward pointing red triangles? These are Through Edit marks. This happens if you have shots with contiguous timecode next to each other. If your subclips all came from one shot and where laid in the Timeline back to back, they’d all have Through Edit marks and be basically unedited.

The computer can run FCE easily, though more RAM would help. The only issue might be if you’re using a Canon camera to capture your material. You might need to capture to the computer’s internal drive and then move the material to the external.

BTW, iMovie can work with an unlimited number of audio tracks; you just have to lay one track on top of another, and unless you pre-adjust the levels it gets hard to control.
