What settings are your media? What is camera set to output HDV or DV? DV out doesn’t work with that camera and FCP. HDV should work if the settings match the material.

First make sure the camera is set to output HDV and not standard definition DV. I does not work with this camera. If you’re changing around settings a lot you may have changed to some weirdo setting that doesn’t exist, so trash your FCP preferences to reset the application.

From the presets that come up when you launch the application select HDV 720p30.

After the app opens go to the A/V settings and confirm that you have those set for capture and sequence settings. Set the device control to HDV FireWire.

Open the log and capture window. Set the reel number and name of the clip. Mark an In point at least five seconds into the tape. Mark an Out point a short distance later in the tape. Press the clip button. Does it capture? If not What exactly happens at each step of the way.

Could you specify what camera you’re your using and what settings are on the camera? I have no idea what HDV-SD60p is.

I’d suggest a good book or DVD to get you started with the application.

Though this was written for FCE, perhaps it will help you get started.

Not sure what you mean by render whole tapes, do you mean capture whole tapes?

New sequence – Cmd-N

What format is this? Break the material down into subclips to rename.

Make sure Linked Selection is turned on Shift-L.

This is a drawing bug in FCP. It’s been there since v4.5 at least, maybe earlier. Rearranging the windows or opening bins into separate windows will alleviate it.
