This happens either using Compressor or when processing with direct export from FCP. Really blows that basic stuff like this can’t be got right.

1. Mark In and Out points that cover the range of the clips you want to measure. The duration display in the upper left of the Canvas will show the time.

1a. Put the playhead over the gap and press the X key to mark I/O.

2. No. You have to press the spacebar or K.

3. No. You can search for unused, but that’s it. It also can’t tell you if it’s in the sequence you’re working on or some other sequence.

H.264 is not a production format; it’s a distribution format. Export to Photo-JPEG.

The lowest frame rate FCP will specify is 23.98. No 15fps any more.

Podcast specifies the file format which uses H.264 as the codec.

Why are you exporting to DV Stream? That’s a muxed format used only by iMovie in post. You need to export to QuickTime Movie with DV are the compressor and the correct frame resolution and frame rate.

The first problems sounds as if you’re seeing frames from outside of the shot as the clip is extended to create the necessary handles for the transition overlap.

Cmd-8 is not the shortcut for default transition. That’s log and capture. Cmd-T is the shortcut for the default transition.

It’s possible the transition is not available because there isn’t enough media to create the overlap. Do you understand about handles?

If you have a 4:3 sequence open and you edit a 16:9 sequence into it, the nested sequence should appear as letterbox. If that’s not happening can you explain exactly what it is you doing, step by step, and what it is you’re trying to achieve.

The sequence items are stored as part of project files. Unless you’ve deleted them they’re in one of the projects. They’re not stored separately on your hard drive.
