It depends how the image was cropped. If it was trimmed it will work. IF it was cropped it will not as the compound clip will be the same size as the original.

You can import individual clips from the card. You don’t have to import the whole card.

If you want to import parts of a clip, Andynick on the Apple forum explained how to cheat the application into using the camera import function when this is normally not used with this camera.

Create a folder called VIDEO at the root level of a drive. Put your clips into it. Open the camera import window in FCP. Click Open Archive. Select the VIDEO folder and click open. The window will populate with your clips.

You do that using multiple layers and the transform function to scale and crop the video. You can position and animate the layers as you like. It’s fairly easy to do, but there is no plugin that will do it for you automatically. Not sure you want to make your product that messy. All those moving boxes with lower thirds can get pretty messy.

That option has been removed. You still will be an option to do a Full Overlap transition if there isn’t enough media for the overlap. But you cannot set a preference.

The far more serious problem is RAM, and that I think is directly OS related. Inactive memory completely pouches the whole system fairly quickly.

“why the hell would a program retain unused render files?”

Earlier versions of FCP did the same thing. All render files for all sequences were retained as long as the application was open. And if you closed a project the render files for all the sequences for their playback were retained. Even if you never opened any of the sequences again or even opened the project again.

Because this thing is constantly background rendering, which I always recommend switching off, it generates two or three manure loads of render files in no time at all.

What exactly was 56G? What were you measuring? Not the currentversion.fcpproject file? Something else? The render folder? That’s not an usual number for a complex project. You’d see render folders that size in FCP7 as well.

I think Jason’s answer is more correct. You should not be using markers as you did in legacy versions. You should probably be using keywords over ranges. The metadata in FCP is very differently managed than earlier versions. If you really want to use the marker method, you can drop the long clip into a blank project and search the timeline index.
