It’s only a hundred bucks!
The orignal eDVD option for Creator/Fusion cost $4,000, and didn’t have nearly the capabilities of eDVD4.

The M-Audio/Digidesign ProjectMix I/O recognizes the Mackie Protocol, so does work with FCP 5. The ProjectMix I/O also runs with Pro Tools M-Powered (sold separately), so if needed, you can work with either.

You didn’t mention if you had contacted your reseller about this breakout cable. Did you? What was their response?
Unless you bought directly from Blackmagic (which I don’t think they do), your reseller should be fixing this problem for you.

Well, that’s too bad. My MIDI/USB suggestion was a shot in the dark…not something I’d done.
I wonder if a Firewire-USB2 adapator would work to either get access to the control surface data, or possibly the whole stream including the audio?

August 29, 2005 at 9:43 pm in reply to: can you capture 6 channels of audio off a digi beta tapeFor starters, ask if the audio will be provided on DA-88, if not, what. Also ask for the timecode log to reference sync for encoding picture and sound.
You might want to find someone local who has DD 5.1 experience to help guide you through the other steps in completing this. Then the next time around, you’ll be better prepared to take on similar projects.

In looking at the 1082 panel more closely, I see it lacks ADAT which the 1884 does have. Both have coax S/PDIF ports, and it’s easy to S/PDIF coax to optical and visa versa, but I don’t think the AJA Io will see the S/PDIF coming through the ADAT. When the Io was first released, this was intended to be a future feature. Don’t know if recent updates have added that. S/PDIF is only two channels also. My system is down right now for some needed reorganization of gear, but it’s easy enough to test on your Io.

Someone mentioned the 1884 earlier and I thought that was the target.
No matter, the 1082 has two pair of MIDI I/O, so you should be fine.

No, the Tascam FW-1884 doesn’t have a USB interface, but one of its four sets of MIDI I/O can be connected to your Mac via USB adaptor to handle the control surface data to run the FCP sound mixer. Other MIDI devices (e.g. keyboards) could be connected to the Tascam, then controlled by the Mac through that same usb/midi path. Here’s a couple sample usb/midi adaptor from Edirol and M-Audio that should do the job:

Mitch,
Do you even need to be concerned with the Tascam 1884’s Firewire conflicting with the AJA Io?
If you’re bringing sources in through the 1884, but passing that output of the 1884 to the Io (selected as FCP’s audio input source) via SDI or the ADAT path, the Tascam’s Firewire interface really isn’t being used for capture/playback. Right?
So, couldn’t you connect the Tascam to the Mac via MIDI (with a USB adaptor), using the Mackie Control Protocol to get the Tascam’s mixer control surface functions, while still keeping the Firewire channel dedicated to the Io?
The Tascam 1884 firewire path for audio could be used for Soundtrack Pro or other apps as needed when the AJA Io wasn’t required for video.
Any reasons why this wouldn’t work?
I’ve been using a similar setup with the Event EZ Bus and the Io for some time. The EZ Bus (I don’t think it’s manufactured anymore) is a nifty digital mixer interfacing to the Mac via USB, but also works as a manual standalone, allowing in and out with the AJA Io via ADAT. This was all before FCP5, so I’m looking for a motorized fader solution to replace the EZ Bus.
Please let us know you’re results.
