On the computer side, Dell 2407s are very good, and less expensive than the Apple Cinema displays.

Layer one, video unfiltered
Layer two, same video filtered.Composite mode on layer two. Experiment with different composite modes to get an effect you like. Also, adjust the opacity on layer two to control the strength of the effect.
Another thought, apply smoothcam and then play with the Mix parameter.

DV footage requires approximately 228 Mbytes per minute or 14 Gbytes per hour.
This footage should reside on a drive other than your boot drive to increase system stability.

FCS 2 is a wonderful, flexible system.
However, you should compare FCS 2 to Adobe CS3 Production Premium. It is very competitive and runs on both Mac and Windows.

Use the optical in if your dat player has an optical out. This will be the cleanest signal, however…
It may be smarter to dub to DV tape, then capture the DV tape with firewire so you have a time coded source if the project might need to be batch captured in the future.
Depends on the project.
iMic is a very low cost way to get an analog signal into your system if you don’t need time code, and don’t have an optical output from your DAT deck.

That turorial, although it is in after effects give the jist of how a basic deinterlace filter works.
Deinterlacing is the process of making footage that was shot interlaced, more appropriate for viewing on a progressive scan monitor.
This is done by interpolating the data in the lines that were not recorded in each field, often sacrificing temporal resolutions and sharpness, to avoid flickering and stairstepping artifacts.
The best way depends very much on your footage, your deadline, and your delivery medium, and your and your client’s quality sensitivity.

Highlight a clip, duplicate it and place it directly above itself in the same way your technique is set up. Set the V2 opacity at 50%. Now place the “de-interlace” filter (with the “LOWER” setting selected) on the V1 clip. Next, place “de-interlace” (with the “UPPER” setting selected) on the V2 clip. Thats it!!! No interlaced-induced flicker. Full resolution, No strobing, No jaggies, just a subtle, classy, non-video look.Me again…
