Sometimes, what you may be seeing, are the “making of” video shots recorded on the set using by the publicity guys using, well, a video camera. Most cameras (depending on location) are shooting at different frame rates than the film cameras and much of the footage is marginally filtered or color corrected giving it the “news” look of a video press release. Two totally different animals.
It always amazes me to see the stark reality of video shooting the same scene that you later see on the film relese print and what a different look each medium can have.

Just a thought here…
Are they (Comcast) looking for an actual DVD or a data DVD with a Quicktime file on it that they import into a system that they use to make the Beta copy? I send data DVDs to one station in my market and they take the Quicktime file from the DVD and import it into their Avid and then play the spot out to tape.

Also, depending on the model of the deck, it will have an edit delay setting in the menu. Adjust this setting if your inderts are consistantly off by the same amount. I believe this is set to a 6 frame delay at the factory. Try adjusting it until the offset is zero frames.
Since you refer to your deck as an older SP model, it’s probably a BVW-70 or BVW-75? There is an edit delay setting on this machine, although you might have to enable the service level menus to get to it. There is a small, fairly well hidden switch to turn on the enhanced menu selection. It is accessable at the lower right the fromt panel(going from memory here), but not easy to get at. Check your manual and it will have a diagram of just how to get at the switch. Try changing the setting and see if it makes a difference.

Don’t necessarily pass on a patch system. There are loads of analog patch bays on ebay right now. You could probably pick one up for less than $100. Do a search on ADC and you’ll get some good hits. I have a Beta SP machine right in my edit room. Most of our source footage is shot on Digibeta these days. The rest of those sources come from a central machine room with inputs/outputs determined by good old fashioned patch bays. Don’t tell anyone, but I even run our SDI sources,(Digibetas, DVC with SDI cards, and the two other Avids) through analog patch bays. The runs are fairly short and it works.

If you do buy a switcher for an analog system, get one that will switch your analog component signals (Y, R-Y, B-Y) into your computer. Try not to use composite video as a source for digitizing since the component signal is superior and will look much better.

Thanks Jerry.
I was looking for a way to just copy/transfer the preferences relating to FCP without duplicating everything and giving away access to parts of my computer that I don’t want people mucking about in and messing things up.
I’ll just try to copy all the plugins & preferences and leave it at that.
