Ditto on the Kona3 card/K-Box combo. I’m running it on a Quad G5 and it works very well. I use one of the Kona’s HD-SDI outputs to drive an Aja HD-SDI to DVI converter which in turn is driving a 27″ Dell widescreen monitor for the client. Excellent picture. I run a pair of 19″ NEC’s off of the G5’s card and also have the Sony 14″ for color grading. It’s a nice workable Setup. Very reliable.
For storage I have a Huge 2Tb raid and a couple of G-raids plus assorted LaCie drives for “Sneaker-Net” purposes.

I’m not familiar with that particular camera but make sure that in it’s menu settings that it is set to output HDV through the Firewire connector and not down converted SD instead. I also remember reading a post a while ago where someone else had problems with JVC’s camera as well. I don’t remember the particulars, but I’m thinking that there was some issue with JVC’s recoeding/output format as well. Getting old and the old brain isn’t as sharp as it used to be…

Take the sound into Soundtrack. There is an effect that will allow you to compress the time of a track and astll maintain the pitch. Not sure if it will doo a 200% speed up. but it works well at other values. It’ under the process pulldown and is called time stretch. It will also compress a track.

LiveType will also do this without any problems. Just select the “small caps” letters and reduce the size. Very fast to do & export.

Take the cover off of the top of deck and watch the tape loading. Make sure that the door on the cassette is getting flipped up and the tape is getting pulled out of the cassette and wrapped around the drum. Just watch the machine try to thread up. I’m guessing that something is preventing the cassette door from opening up, especially if other tapes will work. Also make sure, by opening the cassette door manually, that the tape hasn’t broke inside the cassette. You should be able to see it stretched from reel to reel within the cassette shell when the little door is flipped up. If the tape is broken, the machine will not be able to thread it up properly and the deck’s computer will kick it back out for safety. Tape within cassettes has been know to get severed or simply pulled loose from the supply or takeup reel during a hard rewind or fast forward. Also, is it the only tape that will not load. Will other tapes the same size and length load properly? Sometimes the sensors in the deck fail to recognize the size of the cassette and will not move the reel tables into the correct positions. This will cause an error as well and eject the cassette for safety. Finally, does the reels in the cassette turn freely. The tape could be jamed which will also prevent the deck from threading properly.

Double check your presets for the sequence and for capture. I don’t know why it would glitch, but I noticed that you refer to DVC/DV video as 720×486. Native DVC/DV is actually 720×480. Might be causing the problem.

I would find it very difficult indeed to get any actual work finished here without access to our network and all of the other machines on it. I have the need to transfer large files between machines, usualy graphic animations. We have three edit rooms and five graphic work stations on our local network. All stations have access to the outside world as well. With a good firewall, so far no problems and it’s been set up this way for quite a few years now. Many IT guys see the world from a different vantage point. Not bad, just different.

Are you copying the FCP project file? It should work. Are you running different versions of FCP on the two machines? It should still work unless the Office machine is running an older version of FCP. Then the file from your home machine won’t load. FCP projects are not backward compatable. If the CD files are truely corrupt, why? If the CD copy is bad, try to copy the project file to a jump drive type device and then transfer it to the other computer.

Could you possibly be capturing with the fields in the wrong order? That would explain seeing two different TC numbers on the same frame. Each field is showing a different number. This will only show up on your external monitor. Is your Beta deck locked to the same reference as your IoLa?

I’ll chime in again here for a quick comment.FCP does indeed offer a lot of bang for the buck but it doesn’t do everything. I don’t have a problem with that however. I love FCP and would never want to go back to Avid again. What I do have a slight problem with, however, is Apple’s marketing claim that it WILL do everything a professional editing software needs to do. It may do most things well, but it does still have a few problem areas. If Apple would simply address these issues head-on and fix them, then we would truly have nothing to gripe about.
