Since most likely your media is on the fastest drive, which is your external, your media cache and preview files should have their own folders on that drive as well for best performance.

Adobe these days suggest using Adobe Media Encoder to export projects from AE. Give that a try. You might get better results.

You might check out Walter Biscardi’s site. I think he has had success outputing to tape using BM hardware. Come to think of it , it was to a HD deck.

In response to question 4, generally speaking the job markets vary on your location.
Over the last 30 years I have been an editor/motion graphics person at 2 large facilities in the Western US. The economy has shut down lots of large facilities. Also there is much more competition since now you can own NLE and Effects software relatively cheaply.
Who you know and the skills you develop are probably the best ways to get a job doing what you love.Living in an urban area will probably help as well.
The last facility I worked at for 9 years has just about shut down here in Las Vegas and after being layed off I am still looking for a full time position. Times are tougher for editors now then when I started many years ago.

I use the Production Bundle which includes Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop and some other programs I use as well.
Personally I wouldn’t just get Premiere since After Effects is crucial in creating special effects.
You can buy the dvds of the software or if you have a fast internet connection you can buy the Cloud version which is like leasing the software on a monthly basis. I prefer to buy the dvd disks myself. The Cloud is a bit cheaper.

I have lots, but I only use them to achieve a look when needed. Very few were used in the Footloose Video. Most affects are manually built or achieve through basic editing techniques. There are no short cuts to creativity. 😀
Effects should help tell the story. Random use of plugin effects can really crap things up , in my humble opinion. 😉

I am using Adobe CS6 Premiere Pro and After Effects. That scene is a 3 way split screen using the techniques of speed control, freeze frame and screen placement to achieve the look.
I learn by finding things I like the look of an them trying to imitate and recreate them. Learn the basics of editing so you have a foundation to build on. And above all, have fun.

I try to watch as many different styles of editing to inspire my creativity. Ive been been editing a variety of projects for 30 years but being a musician, music video are my fav. I suggest you pursue what you love doing and steal from the best 😀

I see. I have never used PrP Elements.
Considering the edit bays I worked in over the years have cost from $175,000 to $1.5 million, $200 to me seems a small price to pay for good tools. But everybody has their own perspective on these things. Good luck!
