Walter, I think “careful” is a more appropriate word 😀

There is the need to constantly update the virus definitions on the PC.
That is not necessary on the Mac as of now.

Keeping the firewall up can interfere with the operation of some apps.
This is not an issue on the Mac.

On the PC you must be careful about opening email lest you release a worm.
You can open any email on the Mac .

I choose not to expose my PC to any more risk then necessary. 😛

No Tim, I have found better results when I delete the Media Cache and Preview files when PrP is closed.Then let it generate what it needs on boot up. Of course that means you have to find them on the system, open each folder then delete all the files within.

You might want to use the Adobe Cleaner to remove CS5 completely (unless you need to retain it for some reason).

I have a similar experience to Walter. After many years with a 2008 Mac Pro, when Apple dropped the bomb on FCP 7 I decided I had had enough of their BS.

I bought an HP Z820.When Im in the apps I cant really tell the difference between platforms. Except the PC has lots more power then the older Mac. 😀

I still use the Mac Pro for email and Internet activities. PCs are still more vulnerable to malware and viruses. So I keep the PC off the web except for updates.

I am very happy in how this setup performs for me.

In addition, since you are on a Mac you can…

1. Delete PrP Prefs.
2 Repair Permissions.
3. As ninetto said, delete media cache files.
4. Delete preview files

Make sure PrP is closed when you do steps 3 & 4.

Since you are on a Mac, I suggest you Trash Preferences then Repair Permissions. These are the first 2 things I do when ever I have any issues using software on the Mac. Google for more details if you are not familiar with these processes.

When I experience long delays in the activation of multiprocessor rendering, I have found no solution other then to cancel the render and turn off multiprocessing.

Mocha for AE fills my needs just fine.

The additional feature of the camera tracker in Mocha Pro prompted the comparison to Syntheyes. Obviously its a much better choice for that task as anyone familiar with it would know.

As I said, if your machine can handle native clips, great. But if your machine cant. find out why,fix it or transcode.

I would sum things up this way, if your machine can handle the codecs of your media with no issues, then dont transcode.

If your computer has problems dropping frames or other issues, , first determine the cause. The Mercury Playback Engine thrives on power for the CPU / Ram amount / CUDA from the GPU and I/O speed of media accessed off your raid / hard drive.

Some systems might not do as well as others if some of these are old or lacking. Transcoding might be a consideration in that case.
