How is field dominance marked or flagged in a digital video signal? And obviously it has no meaning in progressive formats, so in that case, is there a marker that identifies a frame as the first frame in a pair when you are in 720p29.97? In other words, what keeps 720p29.97 from being plain old 720p59.94? If there is such a marker, wouldn’t it be in a sort of conflict with the 720p59.94 time code, which would also define the start and end of each frame?

If you can open the AVI in Quicktime Pro, you should be able to convert to an editing format. I have used Camtasia Recorder for screen cap.

By chance, I had to do this conversion myself this morning. Orig sequence was 720p59.94 and I needed 4:3 letterboxed DV50. I used Compressor with Advanced Format Conversion and had to use the Output Image Inset (Padding) section to get the letterboxing. By choosing 16:9 in that drop-down, my 16:9 720p was reconfigured to 4:3 with a letterbox.

What is the final outlet for your program? That, along with your own preference, will determine whether you should convert to letterboxed 4:3 or to anamorphic 16:9.

Personally, I take it into Keynote. You have to watch out for changes that Keynote might introduce if it doesn’t have the fonts or effects used in PowerPoint. Sometimes you will see text boxes that have cropped some of the text off the bottom and you’ll need to extend the boundary of the box to see the text.
From Keynote, you can export TIFFs or QuickTime movies. The reason I use Keynote is that, as of the recent past anyway, it makes better anti-aliased fonts on exported TIFFs than PowerPoint on a PC. It’s possible that PPT on the Mac will also handle fonts better and for that matter PPT on a PC may have caught up by now.
With a square pixel format, such as HD, you can set up your show to match the size and aspect. In SD formats, if exporting stills, you might want to resize them in Photoshop to be the correct aspect in FCP. In NTSC land I export 720×540 and then resize to 720×480 for SD projects.

Are the images RGB mode? Not CMYK are they?

Because footage from Panasonic P2 cards is DVCProHD and there is no real time conversion to ProRes 422 during Log and Transfer.
