So with continous shooting, I do have to offload the first card, even if I know the footage I need is in the second card? Just to get the file to hdd as “whole”? Second card’s footage won’t work without first card’s part of a take? Hmmm…

no hurry, I won’t be needing this info for a few months, as you know…

I was just thinking a situation where two cards are filled with one long shot and after that, you know the needed thing is in second card and then you’d like use that first card again right away.

With good calibration and profilation it is possible to make lcd show almost as accurate colors than crt.
Still for a few months it will be messing with Look up tables and all that stuff, but soon we will get displays with VESA’s new DisplayPort interface. With it we will get past the 8bit color barrier And at a same time lcd quality is increasing, so that it really can show more than 8bit colors.

Yep, I think that marketing talk got me.
If that 37,000 ment 30,000 tapes, 1,000 decks, 2000 z1’s and 4000 fx1’s then there isn’t actually any explosion in the sales.
Anyway there might be over 100,000 hdv cameras sold (sony+jvc) when first hvx ships and surely before any “pal” version, so it is very possible that hdv will be very mainstream and compability with that also important thing.

I think we are the chrystal balls 🙂
But remembering what happend to dvcam; it wasn’t supposed to be “broadcast quality” only for “corporate video”. And now there’s already two sony hdv’s with xlr connectors.

You are right in that consumers are now buying less videocameras. I just saw recent market numbers for Finland and digistills and phones are up and videos are down.
This may however change when hdtv screens gets common and people start noticing the differnse between 15fps vga video from cell phone which is jerky, dark and noisy everywhere but on direct sunlight compared to hdv, which for average consumer looks suberb.
I remember back in -95 when I showed vx1000 stuff to friends and relatives and how amazed they were: “that looks like real tv!” (Not realityTV, I think the name wasn’t invented yet…:-)
Now the amazed comment would be:” that looks _better_ than real tv!”
Here in Finland we will get the first hdtv channel (from Canal+) only this September.

If hdv gets massively adopted, then there might not be so much market for D(vc)P(ro)HD camera.
Of course there is some market, but if Panny makes dphd camera without hdv and it sells 10,000 pcs/year then its price will be many times more than dphd+hdv camera that might sell 100,000 pcs/year.

Reason is the very same than why hvx includes dv tape deck. You need to be compatible with the rest of the world.

I don’t know if people are bying $2k videostyle camera to take stills that you can take with a credit card sized still camera, but hdv is getting very popular.
Sony is selling about 10,000 z1’s per months.
Fx1 sales must be even bigger.
Also new models will sell a lot more than z1’s.
And how many hdv cameras jvc has already sold?
And canon is maybe joining the line?

It seems that dphd cameras might stay in a very niche (hdv is sold 10-100 times more), which might lead to higher prices, incompability, less 3rd party accessories, and ultimately extinction.
Unless some major manufacturers adopt dphd or with this new era of “camcomputers” the format looses its significance.
