Yep, and the specs even tell how many wavelets you can use.
PQ should be quite awesome (=visually losless) when using the max bitrate which is 250Mbitps for picture with jpeg2000!

[emery] “OMG its 176 pages long…. thats some spec!”

I think it’s very straight forward and simple spec.
And that’s why it could be easily adopted by industry.

Eg. compare it to thousands of pages of DVB and MHP specs…

[emery] “I say make the spec DVCPRO HD running through firewire”

And I’d say that having only 8bit color rendition is so 80s’ video tech.

Yes, slowing 25fps to 24fps is the traditional procedure, but with modern technology it might be nice to have 25:24-pulldown, so you can keep the original speed of movement.

On the other hand next gen of dvcpro codec might also incorporate arbitrary framerate also for 1080p so there isn’t need for kludges any more…

So the codec chip just prevents from recording 24fps without anykind of pulldowns?
    Thanks.

[Jan Crittenden Livingston] “The PAL version is what they use in NZ. It will do 1080/25P.”

Can you tell us a technical reason, why pal version cannot record 1080p24?

Ultrium3 deck costs only $5k, but you can’t watch the videos with it…
Alternative would be browsing quality h.264 archive online and “camera originals” on ultrium.

[Barry Green] “it is confirmed from the New Zealand rep that the European/Australian/NZ version will indeed offer 1080/25p.”

Is it also confirmed that “PAL” version does NOT have 1080p24?

[Blub] “mastering and to archive the footage”

If you need heavy duty archiving maybe Ultrium3 would be nice. 400GB per tape and 400Mbps.
Then you are not locked to one video format archiving.

Budget alternative would be wait for a couple of months and then buy blu-ray drive.
