Just a thought… duplicate your text layer, replace all the text with “_” making sure you set the same number of characters. Set your range to the first letter and animate the range moving down the way so it is offset from your animated text reveal in the other layer.

Thanks for your help. I realized that I had set the smoke up on an adjustment layer. Smack me in the head!

to animate each letter, use the range finders in the text animator drop down menu. for the first letter, drag the range finders to just select that letter, create your animation for that letter, then once you are happy with how it looks, duplicate the animator however many times for each letter in the text. then offset the timing of each letter by sliding each animator forward in time so that you have your text animating down the line. takes a little to figure out, but once you see how the animators and range finders work, it’s a charm. for the word “COW” i would create a text animator and set the range value to just include the “C” and then animate the letter. then i would dup that animator, manually shift the range finder to just include the “O” and shift the timing keyframes to the right some, and then repeat same for the “W”, and the “COW” comes to life letter by letter..

sometimes the tracked layer and the target layer become offset, depending on what you have done with your animations already. i find that once i have applied the position/rotation keyframes from the tracked layer my target shifts, so all i do is go to the position keyframes of the target layer, make sure i am on a keyframe, select all keyframes (just click on the POSITION title and they all get selected) then move your layer in the comp window to where you need it…

so what you are saying is that the text you want to animate really isn’t text, but an image? can you recreate the text? if so, then you can use the animators and range finders in the text animation section.

i take it you are ripping and grabbing the paper to crumple and tear it off? you could try using a displacement map referencing crumpled paper texture you can find out TurboSquid, and using bezier and mesh warp to add more crumple.
