I’m not going to comment on which I think is better, because of my obvious bias.

However, I will point out that you can download a trial version and try it out for 30 days.

(Note: The free trial version of After Effects doesn’t include some features that depend on software licensed from parties other than Adobe. For example, mocha for After Effects, some effect plug-ins, and some codecs for encoding MPEG formats are available only with the full version.)

I definitely agree with Dave that—whatever you use to find the out-of-range colors—you fix them yourself. You certainly don’t want a simplistic software algorithm to affect all colors when you only need to tweak one little thing.

I also agree that scopes are the best way to do the diagnosis. I haven’t used Scopo Gigio myself, but I’ve heard good things about it. If you don’t have it, though, the software scopes in Color Finesse are better than nothing.

You haven’t even said whether your operating system is Windows or Mac OS, so I’ll just guess and ask this:

Is QuickTime installed? (It’s not installed by default on computers with Windows.)

I heard that the AE plug in is not that good.

The Broadcast Colors effect is fine for determining which colors are not broadcast-safe. The problems come when you depend on that effect to automatically make all of the color changes for you. In the documentation for that effect, I recommend using it as a diagnostic tool, but not to automatically change your color values.

Color Finesse has some features for keeping colors broadcast-safe.

This After Effects Community Help search for ‘broadcast colors’ pulls up several resources that can help you with this question, including the tutorial by Aharon Rabinowitz here on the COW that Bartek mentioned.

I recount a few tips from Pete O’Connell in this this blog post about rotoscoping. One thing to try to do is to not tweak each vertex on each frame, but instead to try to move the mask as a whole or large sets of mask points together as much as possible.

I strongly recommend Pete’s Creative COW Master Series DVD, _Advanced Rotoscoping Techniques for Adobe After Effects_.

Check to see that the files are being interpreted correctly—i.e., that they have the correct input color profiles assigned.
