Have you updated to After Effects CS4 (9.0.2)? It’s required for using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing on Snow Leopard.

Now you’re moving toward rotoscoping on at least part of your shot. Most keying shots involve some rotoscoping work for cleanup, so don’t feel too bad.

Rotoscoping can be easier if you track the motion of the moving part and apply the motion tracking data to a matte.

Or just reshoot. And fire the person who had green foreground objects in a greenscreen shot.

You probably don’t want to use the Vector Paint effect. That’s a somewhat old effect that’s mostly useful for making certain kinds of motion graphics. For utility painting, you want to paint with the paint tools.

But, really, what you desribe sounds more like a job for a hold-out matte (if I’m understanding what you’re describing).

This is certainly a matter of taste and style, but I prefer to animate to music—i.e., have the music in place before I work on any timing in the motion graphics.

It’s hard to help when we don’t know whether you’re running the most recent version of After Effects CS4 (9.0.2), what kind of compositions and footage you’re working with and what their memory requirements are, whether you have Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing enabled, what your memory settings are, what you’ve already tried to improve performance…
