I think that you’re not understanding how adjustment layers work.
An adjustment layer composites all of the layers beneath it in the composition into one image. Then, it applies the effects on the adjustment layer to that composite image.
So, pre-rendering just an adjustment layer doesn’t make any sense.

First, make sure that you’ve updated to After Effects CS4 (9.0.2). There were a lot of performance improvements in that update.
Second, check out the many tips on improving performance here.
You ask about the disk cache. See this page. The disk cache doesn’t affect RAM preview, by the way.

Just add an expression to the light’s Color property that uses the sampleImage method.

Yes, you can make credits and other graphic elements in After Effects that will look good on a theater screen.

Yes, as people answered on the other forums where you posted this question, 1GB of RAM is very little for such a large composition. Also, you don’t say what version of After Effects you’re using, so it’s harder to help you.
