I have to disagree with Wade about the tutorial sites that he mentioned. The tutorials on AETUTS+ are more for intermediate to advanced folks, as they don’t teach the basics. GSG is even worse; Nick may be fine as a motion graphics designer, and his videos may be interesting for people who already know what they’re doing, but they’re not good for learning the basics of After Effects.
These tutorials on Video Copilot are far better suited to beginners.

You didn’t say what version of After Effects you’re using. If you’re running After Effects CS4, and you haven’t updated to After Effects CS4 (9.0.2), that needs to be your first step. That update fixed a lot of crashing and performance problems.

Be sure to set RAM To Leave For Other Applications to a high enough value so that you’re not starving the other software that you’re running. Swapping to disk is a real performance killer. I have mine set to 4GB on a machine with 12GB of RAM.
There are a bunch of other performance tips in the “Improve performance” section of After Effects Help.

Information about how pixel aspect ratios have been corrected for all of the video applications in Creative Suite 4 is in the “Pixel aspect ratio and frame aspect ratio” section of After Effects Help.

There are two things that might help you to think about:
The Rotation properties are each single-dimension properties, unlike Position properties, which are multi-dimensional properties. If you want to split the dimensions of Position apart to work with each the same as you would with a single-dimensional property, use the Separate Dimensions command. This will, for example, allow you to use Bezier direction handles on Position properties in the Graph Editor.
Also, there’s a difference between the value graph and the speed graph, and the Graph Editor defaults to a different view for spatial properties versus temporal properties.
So, first make sure that you’re viewing the right graph (value graph or speed graph). And then make sure that you’re distinguishing between single-dimensional and multi-dimensional properties and understanding how they work differently.
