Layer styles are applied as the last step in the render pipeline, along with blending modes. They are much more similar to blending modes than to effects under the hood.

The RAM required for rendering of that frame exceeds the maximum size of an image buffer in After Effects. You need to decrease the RAM requirements for rendering that frame.
Without knowing details of the composition, we can’t know what’s requiring all of that RAM. It could be that you’re zooming way in on a large layer; it could be a camera move; it could be an effect; etc.

Precompose the layer with the effect, and then use the Freeze Frame command on the precomposition layer.

The page that you linked to describes how to use a different default. It says that image sequences by default use the the ‘Comp Folder and Comp Name’ template. Just switch to a different template that doesn’t create a new folder.

The problem is that you have at least one frame that is requiring a _vast_ amount of RAM for that single frame. This can happen for a lot of reasons. One reason can be that you have a large asset that you’re scaling up to be really, really large because—for example—you’re zooming in on it as you approach it in 3D. I use that example because of the specific camera move that you mentioned. Try cropping the asset that you’re zooming in on.

What operating system? What version of mocha? What version of After Effects? What codec is used in the AVI file?

If you want a losslessly encoded file with an alpha channel, a QuickTime movie using the PNG codec is a good choice.
> avid also has a free codec (available from their site) called dnxhd, which is practically identical to prores, and it will work just fine with ae and premiere.
