Reading footage requires taking in multiple video streams at once, whereas exporting finished media requires writing one video stream, the former should be on the faster disk/bus.

They are not effects because they can’t be. Layer styles don’t just use a layer as an input; they use an entire composition as one of their inputs. In this way, they are like blending modes, and they must be in the same place as blending modes in the render order.
There are some simple layer styles that have close cousins that are effects, such as Drop Shadow.

Yes.
Or you could just not upgrade your OS to a version that isn’t supported by the applications that you have and use.

Use a supported operating system for After Effects CS5 or upgrade to After Effects CS6 or later.

What operating system?
I’m guessing that you’re trying to use After Effects CS5 on a recent version of Mac OS on which that version of After Effects is not supported.

Yes, you need to clear your caches (Edit > Purge) for performance tests like this to be valid. But you certainly don’t want to clear your cache during real work, since the whole point is that it speeds things up by preventing re-rendering.

Those questions are better put to the Video Copilot folks than to us here on Creative COW.
