I have experienced the IEEE problem with the Macs.
It’s really weird and I tried for serveral days to resolve the problem to no avail. For some reason the FW cancel each other out? I could get one to work, but never both. I tried all the input combinations from the Mac, FW hub, decks, etc. and no matter what I did it would never work, but as soon as I unplug one device, everything worked perfectly. I’m not sure I’ve ever run across a problem like this that I couldn’t work around.Anyway, we just use the S-Video input into the DVD recorder. Which turned out to be a good thing since Pioneer stopped making the deck with FW input.
For decks we having been exclusively buying Pioneer decks for 5 years, for one, very simple, reason-‘first play’
A lot of DVD recorders will burn the disc so when you play it, the DVD goes to the, very uguly-mechanical, menu. It looks so much better to have the DVD just start playing. None of the Panasonic decks can do this, and I’m not sure about Sony. Pioneer is the only company that consistantly creates the first play for a DVD. Plus it’s NOT a feature you can adjust within the deck, it either does it or not.FWIW

Not really.
To get 4×3 footage to look like 16×9, you need to zoom in 15-25% which doesn’t look that good.

Definatly try reinstalling.
You can alway run the updates with a reinstall.
I’m not up to date with my FCE configs, so make sure it’s not an OS problem.Don’t be mornful about Media 100, it can give you just as many problems.
Did you try a different HD for capture?

They just ran a bunch of speed test with the new MacBook & MacBook Pro. They BOTH KILLED the current G5 in rendering time!
So for TODAYS current situation, the fastest Mac you can get, is an MacBook.

Hi,
Although FCP can be used and a final assembly for you animation, it’s not what FCP is suited for.
I would use After Effects if you are going to be dealing vector graphics, as AE can resample the size of the graphics with no resolution loss.
If you are dealing with file sizes larger the video (720×480) or you don’t have really fast drives, then you will probably need to render most of the animation before you can view it.This is not to say that you can’t use FCP- I did a doc. with Photoshop files that were animated by turning on and off layers and wiping in-and-out of layers to show different effects. It work out well, but I knew before hand what I need to do.
If it was me (from the sound of your project) I would use AE, but you could use FCP if you were up for it.

Quick answer-no.
Although there are a lot of filters that can do close to the same work. Usually filters that are design for still work don’t transfer to motion footage.

I’m in the same boat. But I’m going to stretch & try to buy the G5 (so I can get the new Kona 3), otherwise I’ll wait for the intels.
I can’t imagine Apple will go back to the PCIs w/ the intels?? BUt I’d pay a pretty penny to find out!!

You’ll be fine. Apple will continue to have software support for a couple of years with the current G5s.The real trick is an i/o card. If you are going to be needing a hardware card for SDI or analogue decks…then it is more of an issue. Not because Apple won’t support it, but-right now-there are 2 generations of G5s; ones with PCI-express and older ones without. The hardware cards can’t work with both G5s. So if you need a card, or would like a card to work in the future, then it becomes more of an issue.

You’ll need to get a firewire drive to use with FCE.
Transfer you media to the FW drive, then set your scratch disk to the FW drive only.
You should never use the internal HD to capture/master from.
