Hi Zane,

Thanks for the information. Fortunately, I was able to get my compressor working again. Apparently, the problem was an issue with QMaster’s spooling. Once I trashed a couple folders according to a document “Compressor: Troubleshooting basics” found on Apple’s website https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1888, the problem disappeared.

Your suggestion to make a clone of my Hard Disk before I do an update is appreciated. Just wondering if you have any experience with the “Super Duper!” application by Shirt Pocket? I do indeed have this software installed, and it backs up all files on my HD once per week. I am supposed to reboot from the external volume that it saves to, just as if that were my actual computer and Operating System.

I will explore Super Duper a little more thoroughly so I better understand how to execute it should I need it in the future. Thanks for the advice.

Problem solved.

I went through the “Compressor: Troubleshooting basics” document Apple had on it’s website, and the fourth thing on the list solved the problem.

Once I “Cleared the QMaster cache” the problem disappeared. Below are the steps I followed:

Clear the QMaster cache
You can sometimes resolve issues with batch processing by clearing the QMaster cache.
1. Quit Compressor and Batch Monitor.
2. In the Finder choose Go > Go to Folder.
3. In the dialog that appears, type the following path: /var/spool/qmaster/
4. Click Go.
5. Drag the contents of /var/spool/qmaster/ to the trash.
6. Restart your computer.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, Compressor Repair did not solve the problem.

I believe the problem lies in Compressor, as I have tried the same sequence in Compressor on an older machine, and it worked. My old G5 compresses a 2.5 minute segment in 1 hour 10 minutes. My MacPro compresses the same 2.5 minute segment in 10 minutes! You can see why I want to get Compressor working again on the MacPro.

I found an article titled “Compressor: Troubleshooting basics” on Apple’s website. I have gone through the first three items, and so far I still have the problem.

Thanks Wick!

Up until now I have been converting finished Media 100 QT movies to the 0-255 color space for DVD Studio Pro. This will be the first time going the other way. It’s nice to know that it should be so easy to do with the Media 100. Thanks again.

Hi Floh,

Sorry for the confusion. I misspoke when I told Jim we have QT 7.5.5 installed on the G5 PPC. We do in fact have QT 7.5. The Media 100 was running beautifully with QT 7.5, but recently the Media 100 has become sluggish in opening files – perhaps this is due to the length of the program we’re opening (20 minutes)? Since the Media 100 was working beautifully at QT 7.5, I thought it was smart to NOT update to QT 7.6. You know the saying, “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.” At this point do you believe updating to QT 7.6 would help solve our problems? Please advise. Thanks for your help.

Hello Floh,

I have downgraded my QT about two weeks ago, and since then no problems until today. After reading further posts in this thread, I too have experienced the same problems with my finder crashing.

I have not experienced any problems until I tried to export a QT movie from the Edit Suite, and changed the color space from 16-235 to 0-255, so that I would be able to make a DVD in DVD Studio Pro. The resulting QT movie has missing video frames, and my computer has crashed twice –> monitor goes gray, and I receive doomed “charcoal colored error message” which freezes the computer, and I have to manually turn off the computer.

At first I thought perhaps it could be to the new RAM I have installed 3 weeks ago, but why would it all of the sudden start to crash?

I believe I am experiencing much of the same symptoms that Dennis is writing about. Thanks for your feedback.

Hello Olof (and Dennis),

Yes, I have other QT plug-ins installed namely the Flip 4 Mac WMV conversion plug-in. Since downgrading from QT 7.5.5 to WT 7.5, I too have experienced problems with the Media 100. Either it says, “bad video frame” when I play the video in the Media100 window, or I have problems exporting a QuickTime movie without dropped or “black” frames. Any ideas what to do about this problem? Thanks for your help.
