you were bang on (or atleast I think). I plugged the cam direct into the firewire port, and it worked just fine. I know I have gone camera – external-computer before, but maybe that was on a machine this a seperate firewire port ?? unfortunately the macbook only has one firewire and no PCMI. SO I guess I will have to capture direct to the lappy, then most it across to the external. I should get any broken links if I copy the whole folder across ??
    thanks for your help 🙂

hmm, hv30 is plugged direct into a external HD, which is tneh firewire into the computer. Have just tried firewire basic, and nothing.
The computer sees the camera on startup and logging works perfectly?/ thanks for the prompt reply

Dumb question, but where are my preferences located ?
I think it must be leopard, because even imovie can’t see the camera most of the time. I say most, because every so often it sees it. Wierd. Using FCP on my imac with tiger works fine.
