I don’t have any experience with that, so that’s my disclaimer! But, do you have a tri-level sync generator? If not, then you can’t do 23.98…only 59.94. It’s probably why you get the Record Inhibit when you switch away from 59.94.

Check out Bob Zelin’s review of the AJA GEN10 tri-level sync generator. Pretty neat little box!

Keep it in the family (200/170), I’d say.

[Sam Lesante Jr.] “I want something that will be comparable to DVCPRO50 for now until I switch to HD.”
You can either have a “good ‘B’ cam” comparable to the 500 and DV50, or a cheap one that isn’t as “good.”

Kurt, have you had any experience with the Pinnacle/Avid Deko systems? I’ve used the Thunder and DVExtreme, along with the Title/Post Deko software apps, but no experience with the Deko/FX Deko systems, so I can’t comment on Deko operations.

January 10, 2009 at 8:54 pm in reply to: 26-pin cables

I didn’t even think about checking the PhatCat system. The 26-pin accessory cables for the system are brand-specific between Sony, JVC, Panasonic, Hitachi, and Ikegami, so it seems that they vary on pin assignments for the various signals. It looks like I have my answer. Thanks for the suggestion Chuck!

    1. Switch over to SDI for the switcher output, if you can, then capture.
    2. Try running through a VTR for down-conversion, then capture.
    3. Don’t use a laptop. You’ll spend $2500 to get HD-SDI into it. You can do it for $395 with the new Blackmagic Design DeckLink SDI card if you have a PC or Intel-Mac with PCIe slots.

January 9, 2009 at 8:30 pm in reply to: Sync Issues

[Lincoln Waldron] “Over 2 hours, there’s about 20 seconds difference.”

If the actual drift is more like 7 seconds, then you should adjust the audio by 0.1% to accommodate. That is a common drift, and you may also run into a pitch problem (of 0.1%), which may or may not be acceptable. In this case (0.1% drift), the audio would technically be recorded at 48.048kHz sampling rate, but read and play as 48.000kHz. There is 0.1% difference between them, and that also happens to be the same difference between 30.00 FPS NDF and 29.97 FPS DF. This is an issue that can arise when recording separate audio from the video without syncing the audio recorder with the video equipment, and/or by using inferior gear.

Your sync problem may be more complicated since you’ve involved a DVD recorder-conversion-demux-edit process, which throws more possible issues into the mix. If you didn’t roll a back-up (or master) tape (DV, Beta, etc.) this time, you should do that every time you use the DVD recorder for cases like these.

January 2, 2009 at 6:02 am in reply to: So just what is 16:9 SD video anyway?

[Dave LaRonde] “There is no such thing as SD widescreen. SD is 4×3. How on earth would you see a complete 16×9 image on a 4×3 screen? See above.”

Fox actually broadcast for a while in Enhanced-Definition Fox Widescreen, which debuted with Super Bowl XXXVI, on its digital broadcasts in 16:9 at 480p ED (even including Dolby Digital 5.1) before offering its current 720p HD format. A show would be run from an anamorphic master, encoded as 16:9 square pixels into an MPEG-2 transport stream, and beamed to your digital 16:9 TV set where the images actually filled the screen!

Dino’s got it. Do what he says. If you capture and edit in D1 resolution, then output to dv over sdi or analog. CC will be there.

In addition to our state parks division, our state lands division has several parks of the “field trip” type. This one is the 5 rivers delta resource center at the top of mobile bay. The pj supports up to 1080i59.94 input video. I’d rather send 720p from the blu ray but the hdsdi output doesn’t support it…only 480 1080i.

    Justin–

Do you do live shots for news? If so, I’d say you have an extra frame sync in addition to the one for the NBC net feed that is hard-wired…unless that one is also hardwired. If that’s the case, re-wire it to where it is on the routing switcher..unless you don’t have one, and if so, wire it into one of the video patch bay (if you have those 😉

    Bob–

You wouldn’t assume that since a station puts satellite feeds on air, that they would have a frame sync to go with it? 🙂 I’ve seen a few that don’t even genlock their sources, no matter what they are. We’re talking affiliates, not independents!
