General rule of thumb is export out of FCP as a quicktime movie (or similar) using the settings/codecs of your choice. THEN send to compressor. This takes a little while longer, as well as more disk space, but the results are much, much better. Try to stay away from export to compressor from FCP directly. Hope this hels

Brother, your gonna have to read the manual. Capture now does capture in real time off the camera. I don’t have FCP Express, only FCP Pro, but I imagine the settings are pretty similar. Under Final Cut Pro, click on System settings. Uncheck the “Limit Capture Now to …minutes”.

I personally haven’t had this problem. I have created, edited, collapsed, uncollapsed with relatively little problem on that end. I did notice that (on mutliclips) when moving the capture scratch files from one drive to another, clips have a tendency to lose their affilition with the master clips, thus ending in “offline footage” even though everything is there. You have to manually go in and re-edit–that is, grab the in/out points from the “offline” clips and re-insert the same existing footage in. A real pain in the butt. That being said, I would doubt it if there are kinks that are individual to each person’s workstation. I do hope this works out for you, and sorry if I can’t be more of a help.

Personally, I live and die by Illustrator/After Effects. I create all my rolling text and layout within Illustrator, import it in to AE, click on the “continually rasterize” / * button, set my keyframes, and render it out as an animation.(Continually rasterize will allow the text layer to be scaled up or down without losing quality) — (I prefer rendering as an animation as it gives a better quality and more stable text lines) But that is just my own humble and personal opinion. There are many, many ways to do this job…

Off the help topic, we just had a Lacie Big Disk 500GB disk go out on us a few days ago. Same scenario. Lost everything that was on the drive. Lacie’s customer support is very good, and we were able to ship the drive to them. It is scheduled to be back in our hands on Thursday, 1 week after we sent it out. Not bad! Needless to say, I do not trust the drives at this time. I am happy with Lacie’s quick response and help, though.

    September 19, 2005 at 8:08 pm in reply to: FCP5 Multicam on a dual 1GB G4?

I personally am running FCP 5 on a dual 867 G4 with 2g of RAM and haven’t had any problems with running the software. Only issues have been with multi-cam and the Panasonic DVX100a timecode not matching what it should. (You’d have to see it to believe it)–though I think it may have something to do with the 24p functionality of the camera, or some of our shooters messing with some settings :)….. Regardless, in asnwer to your question, on my end, everything works like it should. (I better not of jinxed me….

Though I haven’t been able to get is to work successfully. Tried the manuals, and they really don’t go in to detail (Where’s the idiot section???) I think I am doing 1 thing wrong, but I haven’t figured that 1 thing out yet. Someday….
